What's the Anti Virus "Flavor of the Day" right now?

CharlesW

The Rainmaker
My Norton Anti Virus is getting close to its expiration date and in the past, I have just renewed it.

The past several months I have read several comments that Norton AV was not the best and certainly not the most economical. I also read that it was a memory hog. :dunno:

Anyway, I'm not looking for cheap or free, but rather something that is good.
If that happens to be a cheap or free program, so much the better.
If the programs that have a price are worth it, then I have no problem with that, either.

Suggestions?

And I did do a search, but there hasn't been much dialog on AV software recently.

AVG is both good and free. I have been using it for quite some time. It may not be the best, but it's worked for me. Updated weekly (at least) I believe.

It is.

I agree. AVG actually ranks quite well even when compared to versions that aren't free. I don't think you will be disappointed with it Charles. And, the price is right! :D

I gave up Norton's (Symantec) for AVG. Norton's is just too resource intensive. AVG has worked fine though occasionally they have automatic update issues that make you start looking for a problem when none exists. If you wait it out a day the next update will correct the problem.

AVAST is a good one. If you go to Avast.com and register as a individual you can download it free.
Commercial users must pay.
It will automatically update when you go on line so you will always have protection against the newest threat.

I have heard good thing about both AVG and Avast.
Since the price is not a factor, would it be a problem using both?
Are AV programs compatible or should I just choose one and stick with it?

FWIW, I don't mix my chemicals and I have reservations about mixing my software. :)

One or the other. It would be like running McAffee and Norton at the same time they both compete for the same service or resource and will affect performance, usually in a very bad way. I actually installed AVAST last week for about a day. AVG kept giving me a .bin file error when auto updating. I got nervous thinking something was wrong and tried to repair it, then un-installed it and installed AVAST. This type of problem is the kind of thing that makes you want to steer clear of a product, you don't want to get a "you may not be protected" message in an anti-virus/spyware application.

I had used AVAST previously, I can give you nothing concrete but just didn't care for it. I think it was the spinning balls down in the system tray or the small user interface (looks like a car stereo head unit). After i read up on the error in AVG I pulled AVAST and reinstalled AVG. The next day AVG did its auto update as usual and everything was fine. AVG has been fine for me for over a year and then this problem has happened 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Should this problem happen again I now know how to install the daily update manually which eliminates the .bin file error.

There is also a new kid on the block that gets good reviews. It's called Avira AntiVir, it may be worth looking into. anti virus software downloads and reviews - CNET Downloads

I think your two programs were the problem my Avast runs flawless but I would not try running two at the same time
