What Are Your Must-Have Brushes?

Hey guys,

I'm a newbie detailer (for my cars only), and I need to invest in some quality brushes. I was wondering what are some must-have brushes you guys use.

I need brushes for the interior (dash/trim and leather cracks/crevices), wheels, wheel wells, and honey comb grill.

Right now, I'm doing everything by towel which is often cumbersome.

Thanks!

Race Glaze has a 5 brush kit for your interior, honey comb grill and lug nut holes. For wheels and wells, just get the Mother's brush..cheap, durable and does a great job. If you have deep barrels, get the Daytona.

Is this the mothers brush?

Mothers Wheel Brush : Amazon.com : Automotive

These are the wheels I have (in white),

My wheels are even worse to clean. The best I've found are the 3 pack of wheel woolies. Griot's makes a 2 brush version and either set is the best I've ever used.

For wheel wells, I've found a bathroom bowl brush works very well. Long thin handle with one of those twisted wire bristle ends is very versatile for getting into the wells.

Interiors: From the paint section of hardware stores, a 1 - 2 inch horsehair sash brush has a million uses. Wrap duct tape around the metal ferrule.

Exteriors: The same sash brush as I use on interiors. Works very well on creases, logos and tight areas.

For wheels, you just can't beat 'em. $2 each. Flat handle gets between caliper and wheel. Foam fingers let you get 'behind' spokes, too. Long enough for 11" deep barrels.

Where are these sold Brad? Thanks.

For brushes, (Boar's Hair Brushes ;) ) these days I'm all about the offerings from Universal Brush.

For aggressive undercarriage duty I like the blue synthetic (flagged tips) ones from Walmart, which I've also seen at Home Depot.

For interiors, I use toothbrushes (and *denture* brushes) and the "velour brush" from AI/ValuGard.

I've gotten them at various places at various times. Target, K-Mart, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Dollar Store, etc. the actual brand and packaging varies but its always the same foam brush. I usually buy 5-10 at a time and that will last me a year easily. Have used them for the last 10+ years.

Brad B. - Do those have a metal loop core like my Quickees (link: Welcome To Quickie.com )?

I sill like/use the Quickies, but the way they wear out so fast and the potential for damage from the metal core make me a bit leery of recommending them any more.

No. In fact there is no "core" at all. The foam fingers are woven through a hole in the end if the flat plastic handle. And the flat handle is a big plus because in can slip through the tightest spots. The brush is completely safe.

Brad B.- Hey, that sounds good. I'll have to look around, don't think I've seen 'em anywhere local-to-me  I tried something similar once, but it wasn't nearly aggressive enough, the foam got too floppy when wet....

David Fermani and Jauan@turobwax- Eh, most of my wheels have too little caliper-to-barrel clearance for those approaches. Still gotta reach in there to do the back side of the spokes anyhow, don't you? Lest you miss something?

Legacy99- Heh heh, I must be the one person who doesn't like Daytonas for wheel cleaning :grinno: :nixweiss They do work OK for stuff like coilsprings on some vehicles though.

Just stopped by, but thought I'd say/ask opinions...

I've taken to cleaning wheels (where I can) using wash mitts.
