VW Clear Coat Thick or Thin, Hard or Soft

What is the deal with VW Clear Coat. I have heard it is thick and hard and i have also heard it is thin and soft. I am going to be doing some polishing on mine in a few days and i am nervous about removing to much clear. Can someone clear this up for me.

Read the write up at properautocare on German finishes. As i understand they are thicker but softer. Newer Mercs are coming with a ceramic CC but I don't know about VW.

it seems that every body has had different expieriences with VW clear. it seems though that more people say they are hard. i guess ill try starting out with less intense polish and then move up to what i need.

I was told at the dealership it was about 3mm, which they claimed was thick. But i have no idea.

3 Millimeters is pretty damn thick for a paint..I think they meant 3 mils. 3 millimeters is almost 1/10th of an inch, whereas 3 mils is the thickness of your standard glad trash bag...

Well if it's your first time polishing there is really nothing to worry about. Using IP on an orange LC via PC probably won't even be agressive enough.

My dad has a new 2006 Jetta and his clear is HARD. Let me know if you have any luck with polishing it. I couldn't fix any of his swirls by polishing.

What I would do is pick out some of the worst ones on 1 panel and hit them with your machine, pad and polish. Then see what you have. To do the whole car would be fuelish, I mean foolish.

I have a 2004 VW and the clearcoat is definitely hard. I've had quite a time trying to get swirls out. Neither Optimum Compound nor Menzerna IP using 4" orange pads and PC at speed 6 did anything. I went to the Cyclo with Optimum Compound and SSR2.5, but that didn't do anything either. I've been using some pretty aggressive combos short of a rotary. If anyone finds a method that works I'm all ears!

Much as I like the folks who run properautocare.com, I wouldn't put much stock in that article (or at least I wouldn't generalize too much about German paint). They use a picture of an Audi A6 as an example of that soft clear :chuckle: Heh heh, I had a few of those A6s and their clear is *HARD* as in, use-a-rotary hard.
