Tiny specks on glass...

YNOT

Poorboys Rules!
So I've claybarred my gless and I'm still looking out to see super-tiny specks all over the glass. Some of them are gone due to the claybar, but many more still remain.

What can I do to eliminate them?? is there some special product(s) I need? If so, what are they 'cuz these spots are annoying when the light hits them just right as I'm driving.

:wall

:thanks

How old is the car it just may be due to its age?
The windshield takes a pretty good beating over time from road salt, sand, small rocks, etc... and will leave like a tiny "starfield" when the sun hits it just right.

If thats the case there really isn't too much that can be done other than to replace the glass.

isn't your Mariner brand new? have you been driving a lot on a highway and already have pitting? can you feel them?

Yeah the Mariner is only about 1 year old. I do a fair amount of highway driving. Not sure if I've really tried to 'feel' for them. I'll run out and check it afterwhile.

I have tons of these on our 2001 Mustang GT and the claybar got rid of some on there as well...but not all.

It's aggravating when you think the windows are clean and then the light hits them just right and 'BAM' there are all of these hideous looking speckles everywhere.

highway driving often leaves little chips in the glass, the same as it does to the nose of the vehicle and there is no repairing them if it is chips :( except a hammer and then you get new glass ;)

If they are specks on the glass and not little chips, you could either get a compound specifically for polishing glass or you could get a light swirl remover and use it with the PC. That should help remove anything that might be on the glass that the clay bar couldn't take care of.

Would my SSR1 work? Or is that a bad idea to try? If so...what kind of pad would you guys suggest?

yes SSR1 can work, but are the specs on the glass or in the glass? you would use either a polishing or finishing pad :)

The best way the get glass crystal clear is a cerium glass polish...Ford has soft glass..I had a bunch of the little road pits in my glass...I bought a glass polishing kit that came with a felt pad and cerium oxide and I polished my windshield,,the results were awesome..it is diamond clear now..granted it does not take all the pits out (deep ones) but took 90% out or rounded them out to less noticable...it will remove scratches and wiper trails also....

But the Abrasives in paint polishes really can not cut glass as good as cerium oxide....the kits cost from 29.99 to 49.00 ..just need to do a search...Cerium Glass Polish..

Hope this helps

Im having the same problem on my 06 Acura TSX. But in my case my car sees NO highway miles and is barely driven. Also I dont drive the car in the winter and its garage kept year round.

I used DP glass restorer but I applied it by hand which was a mistake. The glass seemed clean and was very slick to the touch but after driving my car I realized the speckles were still there.

Im going to clay the windshield when I get a chance and try the DP glass restorer again but this time with my PC.

Do you guys think I should use a white or orange LC pad when polishing the windshield?

When I used the DP glass restorer, I only had to use a polishing pad. I think you'll be safe if you need to use a more abrasive pad though.

If they are in the glass there is no repairing it, no matter what pad you use.

If they are in the glass there is no repairing it, no matter what pad you use.

Also if the specks are IN the glass, polishing will make them stand out worse than if you just use window cleaner. The polish actually gets stuck in the chips and shows up white making them more visible. This has been my experience anyway!

I'd also try the polishing pad and then step up if you find you're not getting the results you want. Like AB said, you should be fine with the orange pad if you want to try it. I polished all of my glad with the DP and no white residue. Cleaned it well with a glass cleaner afterwards and you can really see the difference. Applied Aquapel and now ready for anything.

Remember that polishing the glass is not different than polishing your paint, you have to remove the material from around the mark making it less noticable, and cerium oxide and a cotton wheel you will be able to make the marks less visible, but you have to be careful that you don't go too far and distort the glass.

Sad thing is in less than a year the marks will be back. :(
