Those Darn Dirty Rugs & Mats

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
I did a 91 Jeep recently that's rugs and mats where pretty nasty from dirt and mold...however the rugs where in decent condition no rips, sagging or major stains...There was mold growing on the rug under the drivers seat.....This Jeep came from Colorado and was a ski / mountain bike SUV for the driver....I got all the stains and mold out the rugs / mats and they looked great once I was done....However after I got them dry the dirt resurfaces in some areas....Hit it with the shop vac and more cleaning solution....dry and its back again....I'm guessing that its embedded into the padding under the rug and the water and Vac are pulling it back to the surface....anyone have tips tricks short of removing the rugs to take care of this?

This is not the first time this has happened to me but this was defiantly the worst that I had seen.

Thanks
TGIF

You might have to take out the seats and remove the carpet and clean it outside the car. That might be the only way to do this or try to steam it clean once the seats are removed good luck!

I had given that thought but this thread is not about this job...its about the problem that occurs with this type of dirt...I have this happen all the time with driver side mats

Beemer what cleaner did you use..

I have a few I used on this job....apc to do the bad stained areas and a pre-soak....then Oxy-clean with hot water and some extractor solution mixed in....brushed the heck out of it then shop-vac...rinced with clear water brushed again and shop-vac again...they looked alike a million bucks to start the next day and after that the dirt came right back to the surface.

Your process looks to be real good. i think the dirt is deep down in the pile of the carpets and mats and resurface when they dry. The only reason i wanted to know what process was used because some shampoos/cleaners make lots of foam and if the foam isnt completly removed the dirt is embedded(sp) and will resurface. Dont yell i know you this..

This is one reason i bought the piccolo saeco for $45.00. I have not used it yet if works for the type of stains you mention the im good to go if not i'll use it on door jams and around the house..

The process I have is good but I'm thinking that this summer I am gong to get a hot water extractor like a Myte or along those lines....The way that I am doing it now works for most rugs but for the older ones that have the deep down dirt its not enough

What's a Piccolo Saeco? Sounds like a baseball player or musical instrument:)

Bingo!
I think the extractor is the solution. I think even the best of surface cleaning jobs on even less than really bad carpet would yield a lot of dirty water if an extractor was used.
I had even considered renting a "Rug Doctor" unit from a local store and trying it on the vehicles.

I did a older Bronco some months back and rented one from a local place....T he wand wasn't that easy to work with but it did a great job and this at one point was the kiddy SUV so the back was almost black on a medium brown rug....they came out great and I did not have the problem that I had with this one....Its just time that I put the cash up for it...I can get a Myte 5 gallon heated unit for $900 and the detail supplier will give me 90 days same as cash
