The Bays - Chicago DIY detailing business concept

Hi everyone,
I’ve been part of the Autogeek community for many years, and like many of you, I’m a passionate hobby detailer. Over time, especially during the winter months, I’ve found myself wishing I had a more ideal space to work in. That is what sparked this idea.

I’m exploring the concept of a self-serve DIY detailing studio where enthusiasts can rent a fully equipped, climate-controlled bay by the hour or day. Think professional lighting, pressure washer setup, air, vac, proper drainage, and a clean environment built specifically for detailing. There is a similar model in Chicago called The Bays, so I know this type of setup exists in the real world.

My gut tells me there are other like-minded hobbyists out there who would appreciate and support a business like this, but I want to be sure that’s not just my own bias talking.

Since the members here are exactly the kind of knowledgeable detailers I respect, I would really appreciate your feedback.

Would you use something like this if it were available in your area?
What features would be essential?
What would be a deal-breaker?
What would you consider fair pricing?
Has anyone used The Bays or a similar facility and can share firsthand impressions?

I’m not promoting anything at this stage, just gathering insight from people who know this craft better than anyone. Your thoughts, questions, and critiques would be incredibly helpful.

I see you also posted this at AGO; Klasse Act over there has been to The Bays, a number of times.

I will say that there is a detail supply store not far from me in the area here, that was offering their training bay for rent...but they don't seem to be doing that anymore, they are using it for training classes. I'm not sure if the rental thing did not attract enough interest or if they just felt it was more lucrative to use it for training, or if they decided the rental was more trouble than it was worth.

I'd think rent would be very expensive in Chicago. Your idea might work in a more upscale neighborhood.
