Sticky steering wheel?

Just bought an 81 Malibu, the steering wheel is sticky, and after wiping it off with vinyl cleaner and even rubbing alcohol, it like...cleaned off the dirt or whatever that was making it not TOO sticky, and now its even stickier! what should I use to get this stuff off?

Probably some plasticizer that's leaching out of the vinyl--my '76 Buick got like that too. Five Star may be right that you can clean it off.

I have the same problem on my '77 442. I've used all kinds of stuff and it wouldn't come off. I ended up putting a cover on it till I could figure out something that might take it off

I have a '78 GM pickup that does the same thing. I wipe it down with diluted Simple Green when I get in, then dry it very well. That tends to take care of it for the day. Unfortunately, after about a week or so it leaches back to its sticky self.

I assume that being out in the sun for nearly 30 years does it.

Hey what are you guys doing ? Dressing on a steering wheel and pedals is not only dangerous buıt deadly ! A slippery steering wheel would be the last thing I want. I'd go buy a brand new whel instead of applying dressing on it !

Murat,

Apc and Simple green are all purpose cleaners, not dressing.

what happens is the sun, moisture, sweat, dirt, and grease get into the steering wheel and makes the wheel sticky.

I've done quite a few big trucks with this problem on the wheel and shifter.

Also.. I'll let you know when I'm in Istanbul again, maybe this fall.. I can't wait to drive there again, its crazy :chuckle:

Maybe we'll even detail a few cars
