In detailing, the purpose is usually to use on glass to get off some of the crap you can't seem to get off any other way (bad water spots, etc.)

you can also find the #0000 steel wool in the paint department at Home Depot.

It adds an mildly abrasive quality to products-

As Scimmia suggested use with a glass cleaner

Use with a metal polish to clean carbon deposits from exhaust pipes

Use with a wheel cleaner to remove baked on brake dust deposits

etc, etc



FWIW- the #0's are very important, the less zeros the more abrasive
