Speeding in Montana

Hi all, new to the forum. I got a question for anybody out there that knows about speeding in Montana.

I just got a speeding ticket today just outside Great Falls, going 96 on a 75.

My questions is: Is there any way in Montana to not have the ticket go on your driving record? If there is a ways, what do you do?

Thanks in advance!

Normally, as long as you pay the fine, a lot of states won't report it to your state. Kind of an incentive to pay the fine. I got one in Louisianna a few years back and when I called about the fine, they said as long as I pay it, they won't report it to Texas.

That's funny because I, too, just got a ticket -- I was on my way from Great Falls to Helena doing 87 (clocked at 90). Showed the military ID and he kicked it down to 85 in a 75 (no points). If I had the 20 bucks on me, I would have paid the trooper right then and there. He didn't mention that there was any way to substitue a driving class or anything. He said I could contest it or pay it. I mailed the check the next day. The trooper was a pretty good guy.

Are you worried about the points or the ticket itself?

I showed my ID too, but I guess I was going 21 over, that's why she gave me a ticket.

The trooper was pretty nice also.

I am just more worried about points than the ticket, the ticket was only 40 bucks.

Different states handle the out of state points thing differently- some pass 'em along and others don't. Rather than guess, I'd try to find somebody who actually knows the facts about the specific situation.

Too bad she wouldn't write it down that one mph, that surprises me.

Yeah, I haven't paid the ticket yet. When I go to the court house, I guess I'll ask them. But I think it'll def add points, which sucks!

I doubt very much the points would transfer over to your state . As Accumulator suggested check with someone that would know for sure.

How about goint to traffic court instead of just paying the fine? You could act all contrite and plead for mercy and I bet it'd be worth it. Sounds like you're in the area anyhow.

Yeah, maybe I can go to court or something. But I don't really know how it works here in Montana. I'll prob ask when I get to the court house.

Wait a minute, I thought there is no speed limit in Montana.

You are suppose to use "safe speed" and that's all.

Common misconception -- that went away a couple years go (probably so they could keep their funding).

Well, paid my ticket today. Instead of 40, they charged me 70 cuz I went 21 over, which was stupid. And it will go on my driving record.

So they raised the speeding ticket? How can they do that arbitrarily if the ticket said $40?

Sorry to hear that they didn't cut you a break. Guess the lesson here is to be *really* careful about when/where you do more than 20 over. Since an instant-on/laser clocking will get you no matter what, I seldom do big numbers unless I have another car ahead of me that will get zapped first, and I stay back far enough that I can get my speed down before the LEO goes for a two-fer. That extra mile per hour isn't worth it.

I have no idea how they can just raise it. I tried to question the lady but she started giving me an attitude. So I just let it go...

:grrr

You're bitching about a $70 speeding ticket? ***?

Consider yourself lucky Montana only has token fines for speeding, unlike some places.

Make sense. I was there about 8 years ago. I have not been back since then.

It was beautiful country. I was on a long vacation with my wife and two very young

kids then. We took the Amtrak there.

I was not exactly a fast driver. However, coming from a big metro area, I usually did

around 70-75 mph and felt impatient at speed under that. The funny thing was that

the locals were extremely laid back. They drove well below 70 mph and I would have thought

it would be the wild west out there. That was baffling to me consider that (a) there was no

speed limit, (b) the distance between pt a and pt b in Montana was incredibly long

Also, God forbids if you were stuck behind one of those Canadians (a lot of them there

on a single lane road. Without exception they were going below 62.5 mph (100 km/hour).

The first week, I was incredibly frustrated on the road because of these "slow" people.

Then I dawned on me that I really needed some attitude adjustment. I was on vacation in

this gloriously beautiful place and could not even slow down to smell the rose. :grinno:
