Scratches in a fiberglass tub

My dad is working on a house for one of his clients and he wanted to know if I would be able to remove some scratches from their tub with my PC. Anyone ever heard of this being done? I would assume that it would do the job, but I'm a little apprehensive about it. What sort of pad should I use? Compound/polish?

How deep are they? The gel coat in a tub is usually pretty hard. Just start off with a light polish and pad and if that does not work move up a notch.

He said they are not very deep....just something that the owners would like to have looking better. I was thinking of using a white pad with Megs UC, but maybe I should use a milder polish? Should I put the PC on 5-6 or keep the speed down around a 3?

Speed 6 for sure. You can't do much with a PC on lower speeds. Whatever you do just be sure to use a finish polish on it to make sure it's as smooth as possible. If you leave any minor scratches behind from the polish it'll just be a place for dirt to accumulate.

Gelcoat tubs (at least the one I worked on) have really tough/hard paint. I was using 4" pads on my PC and they weren't doing a whole lot.

Well I'm gonna go try this tomorrow. I guess I will bring a 4" of PFW, orange, and white along with a couple different polishes and see what happens. With it being fiberglass, I wonder if a Duragloss product like 501 or 105 would be better suited.

Use the pad that comes with the PC.

Well....I made an attempt at this today. The surface of the tub was *super* dull and under the dullness was very heavily swirled/scratched up. Using my PC on it brought back a substantial amount of gloss and shine, but didn't do too much for the scratches. I'm gonna go back there again tomorrow and work on it some more. Hopefully I will have a lil better luck with the other bathroom tub.

I can see why everyone says to throw away the pad that comes with the PC. It was the pad I decided to go with for this and it is getting pretty shredded up from the backing plate on it. I tried an orange CCS pad as well and didn't notice any difference in results.
