Rubbed out?!

Hey gang;

I just joined this forum with a problem. After discovering a scratch on my 2005 Volvo wagon, I applied Turtle Wax rubbing compound in an attempt to rub it out. What happend next surely is a comon result - I think I rubbed too hard and now the paint is slightly lighter and flater in that section. The car colour is black sapphire - basically metallic black. I know, I know... I'ts a fairly small area, so what's my best option for fixing it without repainting. Is there a special black paint polish or wax, or other miracle cure?

Thanks.

I haven't used TW rubbing compound, but a good polish should fix it no problem. Check out your local carquest/napa for some Duragloss, maybe 101.

For starters toss that TW Compound in the trash. Second get a good medium polish to get the compound marks out and then go to a good light polish to finish up.

Welcome to Autopia! Hopefully what you are seeing is just some "hazing" from using a coarse compound. Hopefully you have removed the scratch (and even if you haven't, I don't recommend further attempts until you have rectified the hazing and see what you have). You will need to use a finer compound (a polish), in the same manner that if you are sanding wood, you need to go to progressively finer sandpaper in order to get a smooth finish.

I don't know where you are located or what kind of stores you have access to, but as far as products available at retail, you could try Meguiar's #9, which is a very fine polish and may take a lot of work. Another, that I don't have any experience with, is Mother's Power Polish, which may be a better choice.

Thanks for the quick reply - so do you mean by sanding, you mean going back and forth and not in circular motions? I live in Toronto, a city of 5 million, so I'm pretty sure these supplies are available. What's the difference between rubbing compound and polish?

NO, NO SANDING! That was an analogy regarding the step-down of polishes vs. sandpaper. Generally speaking, a rubbing compound is more abrasive than a polish.
