Well, I was at Shucks buying some stuff and I saw a customer buying some tar/bug remover. I was giving him some recommendations on products that were on the shelf, and I mentioned my new business. He was buying the bug/tar remover to get "a little paint" off of his vehicle.
I went out to take a look at it and had to chisel the stuff off to get it off. He asked if I could do it that day, but I was busy. He told me it was his son's truck and his only instructions were to KEEP IT CLEAN! He promptly drove through road paint.
After hearing his sob story, I offered to take it off for him for a 'small' fee.
The process:
Liquid Wrench to loosen up the outer layers of paint.
Scrape with plastic chisel.
Repeat.
And repeat again.
(you get the idea)
Once most of the outer layers were off, (it was much deeper than the pics show) I used Goof-Off and a rag to remove the rest of the residue.
The nerf bars required a little more care, as they tend to scratch much easier than the paint and plastic, so I used an old credit card to remove the last couple of layers.
Then wash and dry using DG AW.
Here are the before and afters:
Before:
Afters:
I wish I had taken another pic of the nerf bar/rocker panel, but apparently I had forgotten. You can see that it's all gone in the full truck pics. You can see in some of the afters that there were some specks left. After I took all the after pics, I pulled the truck back in and got all of the stuff that I missed, and it came out 100%. My customer was PUMPED!
He could deny that it ever happened.
Any tips on getting this stuff off any faster? While I was finishing this job another customer came up with the exact same problem. I think I'm going to need any help I can get to make this a little faster. This was about a 7 hour job.
