Review - Zymol Japon Wax

I’d like to dedicate this review on Zymol’s “Japon” wax to Vega@Autopia for always inspiring me to keep my 1998 Civic looking years younger then it is old!

From Autopia’s copy for Japon wax:

“Zymol Japon Wax is a unique automotive wax blend designed specifically for the needs of Japanese paint systems. Utilizing a specialized formulation of carnauba wax, nourishing oils, and drying agents, this easy-to-use wax blankets your vehicle with lasting protection and shine. Zymol Japon Wax is ideal for use on all paint colors.”

This is the first Japanese specific car wax I’ve ever used (or heard of). Until now I was blissfully unaware of the unique needs of my Honda’s paint system. Better late then never! Sorry old girl…

Directions:

1. Wash and dry car. HD Cleanse if necessary (see owner's manual).

Prior to waxing, I washed the Civic with Zymol Auto Wash (review coming soon) and followed up with P21S Gloss-enhancing Paintwork Cleanser. By applying P21S GPC with my Flex 3401 (speed 5) with a white CCS pad I insure my paint is free of old products/ road grime while leaving me with a nice glossy surface. If you’re looking for a pre-wax cleaner, P21S Gloss-enhancing Paintwork Cleanser is an excellent option.

2. Apply with enclosed Zymol wax applicator using even back and forth motions. Do not allow to dry!. REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING.

After first doing a 2X2ft test area to understand how the wax behaves during application I realize how misleading the instructions are because you do need to allow this wax to haze over and only a swipe test will tell you when the wax is ready to be removed:

By allowing the wax time to set up, you’ll have a much easier time removing it vs. immediately trying to buff it off like the directions would have you believe.

Knowing this, I can move onto the rest of the car w/o hesitation for how far I can go before the wax is ready to be removed:

3. Buff gently to a high gloss using Zymol Cotton buffing towels.

Ok, when exactly were these instructions written? 1995? Cause there’s no way a COTTON buffing towel is touching my car. Instead, today in 2015 I reach for one of my trusted microfibers and buff to a nice deep gloss:

And now the results:

Morning dew beading up:

Conclusion

Overall, this is a very nice wax to use. It spreads evenly and only takes a small amount to do an entire car. Here’s the jar before and after I was done including 2 coats on the hood, roof, and trunk:

Before:

After:

I can easily see getting 15-20 applications out of this 8oz jar. At at $54.99 it’s completely priced against other mid-level carnauba waxes.

Additional observations

The whole “REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING” bit in the instructions has to be aimed at people who leave their waxes in hot garages or car trunks only to discover months later the wax has dried up and is useless. Still being true to this review, I stuck the wax inside the fridge between applications:

And then this happened:

The plastic rim broke while I was unscrewing it to apply a second application to the roof, trunk, and hood. The jar isn’t very thick plastic to start with and my hunch is the cold made it slightly more brittle resulting in the chip. Thankfully when closed the lid covers the gaping hole so it’s shouldn’t be an issue. I don’t recommend refrigerating this wax - just keep indoors, away from temperature extremes, and you’ll be fine.

Lastly, what makes this wax better for Japanese cars than any other wax is still a mystery to me... do you know?

As always, thanks for reading my review. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Sounds to me like we need a ZYMOL giveaway in the future. I remember in the 80's when their product hit here. I also recall trying a few back in the day with great results. Almost seems like a re introduction of the product line. I recall their little wheel brush being a sought after item then.

They have this for Japanese, and I believe one for German. I got em both when they were first issued. (think the instructions are the same as then 2010 I believe)

Wasn't really impressed for the price.

Not sure what the difference is besides marketing.

I hate to think of what condition your Civic would be in without the support of Autopia giveaways ;) Great review Angus.

Angus won this wax in a giveaway after correctly guessing the shampoo being used in an Instagram post:

Keep an eye out on our Instagram and Facebook page as we have a lot of giveaways and contests planned for the future.

I am going to make a was for people with too much money. Might just over label turtle wax. Japanese car wax? Most of these Japanese cars are manufactured in the usa.

What a joke.

No more of a joke than dude beating a panel with a lighter and saying his coating offers scratch resistance.

Than there are nano bridges... Remember those?

Seems like any good quality wax would do what that stuff did. The paint prep is the important. $55 a jar seems awful expensive to me. Ill stick with 915 on my honda.

If you guys want to try a really nice Zymol wax - try Glasur. It's like luxury in a tub. It's around $100. But, it's pretty amazing how it spreads like oil. It's one of Zymol's "estate waxes". It has a real expensive feel for $100. It's a wax for the purist only - no polymers here.

It also is known for its great beading and longevity. It has a crazy amount on coconut / vanilla scent in it. It's the consistency of mashed potatoes.

If I had to eat a wax - it would be Glasur.

I can't see Zymol's $600 + waxes being much different.

Oh....I see only the BMW gets the carpeting....

I'm glad you decided not to store it in the refrigerator, I'd be afraid someone would eat it...because apparently some of these Zymols are good enough to eat (see below).

And what was the shampoo???

Than there are nano bridges... Remember those?

Eh, that was a bridge to nowhere...

If I had to eat a wax - it would be Glasur.

Noted.

Zymol's nice tight beads from last night's rain:

Wow, nice beading!

Oh....I see only the BMW gets the carpeting....

Ha! I've really got you hooked on the carpet idea!! Part of the original joke was only having the carpet underneath the garage queen. My wife's car usually sits where the Honda is but since i was detailing... her Subaru was outside.

Oh gosh no, since I was planning on doing the review I wanted to follow the directions as closely as possible. Japon is setting comfortably in my detailing closet next to all my other supplies.

And what was the shampoo???

It was Zymol Auto Wash. My prize:

(Thanks again, Vega!)

Wow, nice beading!

Thanks!

*5 Week Update!*

I'm happy to report Zymol Japon wax is still going strong and showing impressive beading after last nights rain:

Being a 'nuba on top of my daily driver that sits outside 24/7 I thought I'd start to see LSP fall off by now. But nope! Not yet :)

*2 Month Update*

Japon is still holding on, but clearly loosing the fight:

After 2 warm and sunny summer months I can't expect much more.

Two months - call me impressed! Certainly a better alternative to some other beauty waxes that cost more.

Totally. For a traditional Nuba to last this long on a DD that sits outside 24/7 is pretty respectable.

nice review
the zymol collection at wallmart is responsible for starting my personal detail bug

i remember using the cleaner wax when i was a teenager as well

always wondered about their higher end products
