removing double sided sticky tape

My window/rain shade came loose from its black double sided sticky tape. I will have to remove all the tape over the top of the window and it is on a painted surface. What solvent do you guys think is best and how should I use it. I probably have to remove 20 inches of the stuff

Plastic razor blade, Goo-gone, clay. All will help.

Goo-gone will take it right off.

abbey, just soak it up good and start to pick away? I have used goo-gone on gum on carpet with perfect results and it had been there for years.

I like using 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner. With the 3M stuff you don't need to re-wash the area after you apply it. Also, unlike goo gone this stuff evaporates, which helps if you miss a spot when removing the cleaner.

I'm not sure how similar goo-gone is to goof-off, but when I tried using goof off for removing emplems, it really seemed to soften the paint and consequently marred pretty easily. So careful as she goes. I now use a solvent that somebody gave me that works a lot better/safer, but I don't know what it is exactly.



As BigJim suggested, many guys have had good luck using WD-40...so maybe try that approach first. Then go to a solvent.



The best method is costly - body shops have an air powered tool with a rubber eraser-liker wheel that handles the job in short order, and without deep marring, but the wheels don't last long and are $20 each.
