Removing 800 grit scratches

Anyone have any thoughts on the best way to get rid of them? They're around the edges of a 1/8" circular paint touch-up, left over from sanding the primer. I have 1000, 1500, and 2000 grade 3M wetordry papers, but now that the 800 grit marks are there, I don't know if using progressively higher grades will only make things worse, or if I should try to get the 800 marks out straight away with 3M Perfect-It II rubbing compound followed by 3M Swirlmark Remover. The paint is metallic silver, and if I run my finger over the white dull spot caused by the 800 grit paper, the spot momentarily disappears (especially with a little moisture) before reappearing, so I'm hoping the marring isn't *too* deep.

Others will chime in here, but I know that most of the compounds advertise that they will remove 1500 grit sanding marks, so I would wetsand with 1500, then compound, then polish.

It took 2 or 3 passes with Diamond Cut to remove 2000 grit scuffs from my last touch up and wetsanding project. Somehow I doubt that FI-II will take care of 800 grit scuffs. You will need some serious abrasives to get out scratches that deep. I would do what 2wheelsx2 said to do. That sounds like good advice to me. :xyxthumbs

I'd suggest using 3000 or 2000 grit and seeing how it works out. No more than 10 passes with plenty of lubricating soapy water.

1500 is relatively harsh. I'd start with something more conservative. 2000 is a pretty good grade for wetsanding.

Basically, use the least abrasive method to achieve your end result.

I'd tackle it with the 3000, no good, go to the 2000. The 2000 should be able to get it out.

Then DACP. no good, then Compound power cleaner or diamond cut.
