QD+ - A hidden gem in the Poorboys line up!

I recently decided to try out QD+ since I’ve tried out the rest of the Poorboys line-up (and like it a lot). I haven’t heard much about QD+, so my expectations were set accordingly.

When it arrived I expected it to work similar to Clear Perls, Adam’s Detail Spray, etc.

Another way said…. spray on, wipe off, no streaking, slick feeling/clean surface, extend the protection on your finish.

Step1 - On my first attempt, I shook up my bottle, adjusted the spray nozzle, and misted a panel. QD+ came out in a thick blast, kind of like a shotgun pattern, dried quickly, and smeared a bit when I wiped it off. As a WO/WO product, this wasn’t going to be the answer.

Step 2 – Correspondence to Steve for advice, since he knows his products best.

Step 3 – Apply via PC, using a light polishing pad, speed set to 4. It takes 20-30 minutes to apply and remove QD+ to my Tahoe (all surfaces), and it produces a slick surface, that so far has seen 3 weeks of solid protection. I think you could actually use QD+ as a stand alone topper (especially so during the summer). The way it cleans and protects reminds me a lot of PwC, but takes even less time to apply/remove.

QD+ is typical Poorboys packaging. 16oz bottle, spray trigger, standard black/white label with easy to follow instructions. The product separates if left standing, so you need to shake it well before stating out.

Last night I did a quick detail (no pun intended) on a Jeep Wrangler that sits out 24 x 7, and basically hasn’t seen any protection on the paint since it was new 2 years ago. I washed, clayed, dressed the tires/trim, and buzzed on a coat of QD+ in a little over 90 minutes. The owner couldn’t believe the results achieved that quick.

Here are a few other things that I’ve noticed:

-If you have a new car, want to save some time and not compromise on quality, this is a great product to consider.

-Works great on slightly oxidized (single stage) or dull paint.

-Does not remove aged water spots but works well on fresh ones (if that makes any sense).

-It retains it’s slickness after a few washes.

-It has a nice clear/reflective look.

-Best applied via a foam hand applicator or PC. Does not work well as a spray on, wipe off product.

-Great for cleaning/dressing jams.

-Does not stain.

-If you apply a uniform, thin coat it wipes off like hot butter –leaving a streak free finish.

-I’ve applied it to 2 SUV’s, and 3 cars, and still have ½ a bottle left. A little goes a long way.

-Dries quick (at least it does in the summer!!!)

-It works very well with Spray and Gloss, for those after the insane/clear shine. (apply, let dry, mist on S&G, and wipe off). I prefer to do a panel at a time, vs. the entire vehicle then wiping down.

-Does not remove/hide defects.

-Very good cleaning properties. It will take care of fresh tar, and other light contaminates on your paint.

-Retains slickness after you drive through the rain for a day or two (In the NE, many products quickly lose their slickness properties after you drive through a day of rain).

I think QD+ offers excellent cleaning properties, and a decent level of protection.

Interesting review ....QD+ was originally introduced to be a booster for EX. It helped to maintain the carnauba look and slickness. It never really seamed to work well through a sprayer as it was way too thick. We shelved it for a little while while it was reformulated to comply with the new VOC regulations.
It was actually by the request of a few retail customers and Autogeek that we made a new batch, and Autogeek bought almost all of it. We are reconsidering it's name, maybe QW+ (Quick Wax +) and eliminating the spray on directions.
It does seem to work well on a pc with a polishing or finishing pad to restore luster and gloss to dull surfaces.

Thanks for the review John :).

I have to bust out my 2 ounce bottle and give it a go again.

All this and no pics? :D

Sean,

Sorry no pics. I left my digital camera in the UK, and it's in route back to me. A few pints at the summer office party is to blame!

I'm planning to compare QD+ with OCW. I suspect that QD+ will have the upper hand in cleaning properties, and OCW will win out in durability, but I'll give it a go to find out for sure. I really like 'express wax' products like these in the winter --when you want to add some protection with minimum effort. As far as looks go, I think you achieve a clear/reflective gloss with QD+ after a single application, where OCW requires a few applications to get the paint to 'pop' -at least, that's been my experience.

Thanks for the review. I know I was not happy with the hand application for QD+, too thick to spray, streaking on spreading and just alot of drag when trying to apply a thin coat by hand. I did like finished result and the extra protection. It was the only PB product I was not ecstatic over. I will try you method and rethink it as more of a booster wax for the PC and remove with S&G.

My process is a little different when I apply by hand via a foam applicator. I should have explained.....

Using a foam applicator (I like the oval German double sided ones the best)

-I prime my pad with S&G until it is damp (not soaked).
-Then a spray or two of QD+ on my pad and lighly spread it on the panel.
-Wipe off (it dries quick in the NE at this time of the year).
-Optionally, I mist S&G on the panel before wiping it off. It seems to add to the slickness & clarity, and S&G doesn't leave behind any residue (which I personally like).

Excluding set up time, I can QD+ my Car & SUV much quicker with the PC.

I've been very happy with the results, and it doesn't take a lot of time/effort.

Hope this helps.
