Project Cockroach Teaser Pics

I'm calling this 2008 Toyota Camry "Project Cockroach" because for the first couple of days I worked on this car, every time I looked in the interior I would notice a cockroach crawling away.

When I first inspected this vehicle, I didn't have much hope for it and even tried to turn it down. But after a test spot I accepted the challenge. Here are a few teaser pics before I type out the full process, tools and products used for this d̶e̶t̶a̶i̶l̶ restoration. I'm just VERY EXCITED to see this car leave the garage and wanted to share some of the pics today.

After posting these pics I want to take another long hot shower. I think it's unfortunate someone would treat Motor Trends 2008 Car of the Year like this. It's only 7 years old and was in such bad shape. The previous owner must have been a heavy smoker.

Stay tuned for the full write-up!

Does the Tornador Velocity work like an extractor?

Yep. But this interior was so bad I still had to come back with a hot water extractor. The 50/50 pic of the dirty carpet is after multiple scrubs with a carpet brush on a DA then a hot water extractor. The Velocity-Vac has insane suction and did a great job for the hair and sand (this was a female owned car) but not enough for the deep stains.

Here's a picture of the drivers side carpet after the Velocity-Vac + Turbo Enzyme Cleaner.

I gotta know, what you did to the scratches...

This car was covered in deep key scratches. Some of them came out with just a wool pad on rotary then polish. Some of them I wet sanded > rotary wool > polish. The trunk lid was so bad I wet sanded the entire trunk.

The doors were wet sanded > rotary wool > polish > Dr Colorchip. You can still see the light traces of the scratches if you bend over and look directly at the panel, but it's MUCH better.

Yuck! I need a shower after just looking at the photos!! Great turn around, Vega.

Gotta ask - whats the orange car in the reflection? Some type of kit-car?

Yep. A kit car based off a Ferrari P4. The owner of the dealership used to race cars and that's his project.

Very nice Ray. I hope that will be the worst car you will ever have to work on but I'm sure someone will beat it

I'm not looking forward to it lol. But yes, I've already mentally prepared myself for worse.

May want to try these next time.

Lol never surrender.

great result, just goes to show what can be achieved with the right man on the right machine, top of the class and take an apple out of the teachers desk MR.

Wow.

I don't know how I missed this thread but that's some pretty amazing work, Ray. I'm pretty sure that anybody would be more than happy with those results. :bigups

WOW! What a great result. I can't even imagine what the engine bay looked like. I'm always amazed at how people treat their transportation.

Great job Ray !!!! Working miracles...:bow:bow

Thanks Pat :)

Wow.

I love the Velocity-Vac. Makes vacuuming fun.

I agree. I'm thinking of purchasing my own compressor soon just so I don't have to move the car out of my bay to use the compressor. The Tornador alone is worth the investment I think.

Thank you sir.

Thanks and yes they were happy. He told me I saved him thousands from having the car repainted.

Sweet. Can't wait to see the full write up. Impressive

Thanks

I want a pic of the red car in the reflection in the scratch picture?

What can I say, I'm a car guy :-)

That car gets so many inquiries! I'll have to make a post dedicated to that kit car (it's based off a Ferrari P4). It's actually out of the shop now getting the wiring done somewhere else.

It was disgusting. I can't understand how someone can mistreat a nice car like this either. The engine bay wasn't too bad actually and it still runs great. These Toyotas run forever.

Loved the Scarface gif!

I always read it in his voice :)

Amazing turnaround, that car was hammered! I'm particularly interested in how you did the headlights, I have two BMW's with lights like that.

Complete wet sand process using 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 grit sanding discs on a Griots Garage 3 inch Polisher with a Meguiars 3 inch interface pad. Then I compound with a rotary wool pad and finish with a polish on a DA. I didn't document the headlight process step-by-step on this detail, but you can view the steps on this detail: 2006 Hyundai Sonata Detail

If you have 1 or 2 vehicles with bad headlights, you can get all the sanding discs you need in the Mirka Assortment Pack.
