Product Review: BlackFire Crystal Coat Paint Coating

Smack

New member
With another new coating coming to market many people are excited to have another option to choose from. Having a coating added to the PBMG lineup makes it exciting as well in that it shows they are not resting in new product development to cater to ever expanding needs/wants from the consumer.

This new coating product from PBMG is what is expected from the BlackFire lineup. The break neck whiplash inducing shine we have come to expect from the product line. Hopefully the complimentary maintenance products will be added to maintain the BlackFire Coating such as a coating detailer and coating booster…
BLACKFIRE Crystal Coat Paint Coating Kit

BlackFire Coating Pros:
Lays out very nicely due to being so thin
A little goes a long way
Flashes nicely after being leveled with mf towel
Noticeably darkens surface

Cons: Very watery and easy to over apply if not careful

BlackFire Paint Prep Pros:
Smells like cologne making it enjoyable to work with during the paint prep process
Spreads easily and flashes within a workable time frame.
Leaves surface ready for Coating application

Cons: None that I can think of

This Focus ST was in decent condition being fairly new with roughly 2K miles on it. This Focus was the perfect test bed for this new coating review.

Wheels cleaned with Meguiar’s D143 Wheel & Tire Cleaner
Wheels deconned with CarPro Trix

Now I must say that this was my first go round with this product and really over applied the applicator when going over the roof when starting out. You will see the streaks on the roof as I didn't get them with the first swipe of the mf towel. After catching that the roof was wiped again to make sure no excess coating was left behind.

Now here are a few before pictures just to capture the condition of the vehicle.

Sounds like a very user friendly coating to work with and great results.

Thank you sir.

It is very user friendly

Very nice result, Smack!

Thanks Tom!

Nice review. Keep us posted on the results as you live with it.

Where are you located. Love the car

Thank you sir. Sure thing.

This is my neighbors car and I see it everyday. I am active duty military stationed in Germany.

Nice !!

I too found it easy to over apply, but very easy to level. Easy to use very forgiving.

Great looking

Great job as always sir! Couldn't agree more with what you said. I like that its still a quartz based coating but easier to apply than Cquartz.

Running a test now on my personal car. Cquartz UK on the sides and BF Crystal Coat on the tops and bumpers.

Sure. Thanks for your service. I have a friend over in Korea. Be safe.

Thank you sir.

Awesome looking shine on your PB ST!, don't forget to post it on FocusST.org...............

Thank you!

I will bring it up to the owner. I'm sure he is a member over there.

Thank you Justin! This was my first go around with a Quartz based coating.

Really like the overall ease of use. Let us know how it turns out.

Damn, Mike that looks fantastic! They should have called it "BlackFire Candy Coat Paint Coating" 'cause it looks sweet on that blue ST!

I'm also impressed BlackFire SRC Compound finished down that nicely. How do you think it compares to FG400?

Thanks Ian! I agree. It really posses a hard candy like shell.

I choose this compound not only to maintain product synergistic compatibility for this review but also as a great one step. Both having equal weight for this review. Combined with the White Hybrid pad provided me everything I needed for this review.

IMO, it does not compare to FG400 but more along the lines of Menzerna SI1500.

Nice review.

I wonder why ShaneB disliked the post.:thinking

Thanks Al!

Didn't see that until just now. Maybe he would care to provide some feedback?

What would your thoughts be for layering it (perhaps just a single panel to see how the looks improve and possibly help on with the durability). The product description on the AG does not make a mention of layering this product though compared to other quartz coating (like cquartz, that provides an hour window and mentions layering helps increase mar resistance). Perhaps just a panel wipe on one of the important panels (after you give it a wash) ?

Just posted this on my thread posted on AGO.

I do not see any problem with adding another layer within 30-60 minutes after the first layer.

The problem with quartz based coatings such as the BlackFire, CQuartz, and others is that they form an incredibly slick glass like surface and are non-porus. If you are going to add another coat it is suggested that is applied within an hour otherwise it may not properly bond to itself.

Imagine if you will, you take your car in for paint repair. In order for the new paint to be applied and bond correctly the surface needs to be scuffed for the paint to stick. If not, you will run into problems as the paint being laid down will not properly bond, begin to sag after a coat or two, and have runs. After a while that paint will being to flake off as it never had a proper foundation to grab onto.

Now, a coating won't behave exactly like the above paint job but it still needs a prepped surface to adhere to otherwise it will prematurely fail. What I would do is "scuff" the surface in the way of a finishing polish such as SF4000, Wolfgang FG, M205 etc with a finishing pad to make sure it is ready for application. With the surface being "scuffed" now it is ready for application of your new product. If you want to lay down a second coat make sure it is applied within 30-60 minutes. Not sooner. You want to give the product time to flash and adhere without interfering during this time.

This method will apply to all Coatings regardless of chemical makeup IMO.

Best Regards,
Mike

I asked they Autopia Facebook page (that I believe Ray handles) and he said although layering is not recommended but can be done in 12-24 hours.
That to me however seems like a time that coating has set in and may not like it's own layer. So layering early makes sense to me as well.

Nope. Not even a little bit.

You can layer a coating in fact it should be layered within an hour while the surface is still tacky. This will ensure that it has something to stick to. Think about it, Coatings are designed in a way nothing will stick to it including themselves. Wait 12-24 and try applying another layer. The fresh product being applied will just bead up on the surface.

Exactly.

Is it ok to use BLACKFIRE Total Polish & Seal and then use the crystal coat or either use the less expensive Crystal Seal Paint Sealant, will there be noticeable difference between the 2 products?
