Pitted and scratched windshield....

When the sun reflects off my windshield at certain angles, I can see hundreds of little tiny pits, and a few 'swirlmark' looking scratches, no matter how clean the windshield is...



I think they're imperfections in the glass.



Is there any way to lessen or remove these imperfections? It's a pain to look through these things trying to drive, and it makes the car look bad IMO.



I saw the PC Polishing kit at CMA, is that one solution?

I don't know anything about that particular kit, but I can tell you from reading many post regarding this problem with windshields in 911's that most such kits and applications are completely worthless if your windshield is truly pitted. Many 911 owners have tried various DIY glass polish kits and have paid glass professionals to fix pitting as it is very common on 911's because of a combination of things including the somewhat upright angle of the windshield and the "soft" glass used by Porsche. Other than replacing the windshield I know of no one that has been satisfied with the results of such “fixes.�



If you do try the product please let me know how it works as my windshield is pitted and exhibits the characteristics that you described. Very annoying when driving under certain conditions. Can you feel the pitting?
 
You see 100's, I see 1000's in my car.



The pits are from road debris spitting up and knicking your window and the swirls are more than likley from the windsheild wipers. I had a Saturn for one year and I have a few pits but the windshield looked almost perfect. I bought my camaro used and it literally looks like someone sand blasted the windsheild when the sun is directly in front of me.



I have a crack in the glass, just waiting for it to grow then I'll be paying my insurance company a visit.
 
I have a very badly pitted windshield. It made it hard to drive at night and direct sunlight because of the glare. I tried Duragloss Nu-Glass. It didn't take out all the pits, but it sure reduced a lot of the glare. I might try it again with putting a little more elbow grease into it to see if it will work better. I recommend the product. However, I wouldn't expect big results. Pits are pretty much, from what I hear, impossible to remove. And those pc polishing kits I have heard can cause more damage if you use it wrong.



But the Nu-Glass will definitelyl get rid of the swirls.
 
I also have millions of tiny pits on my 1-year old car's windshield when viewed under direct sunlight. When i got the car new 1-year ago, there wasn't any except of some waterspots looking stains on the windshield. In my attempt to make the windshield look perfect, i have used numerous glass polishes on it over the 1-year i had the car. I believe the pits are due to me over-polishing the windshield. I also believe that windshield glass is made of mixture of some kind of sand and hence the appearance of pits (only when viewed under direct sunlight) when the outer layers are exposed. I really regreted my action of aggressive windshield polishing. So, be careful on the windshield.
 
Pits are caused by small debris (pebbles,sand, and such striking the glass but not breaking it. Most all cars have some and up north where they put salt and sand on roads they are worse. They can be repaired by a good windshield repair place. The scratches can be polished out with the correct equipment, we do it all the time and also remove acid rain and water spots. The scratch removal is $75.00 per hour and it DOES NOT distort the glass. A special glass polish is used and a special high speed polisher. We have to also cool the glass during the process with water. Heat, polish, and water remove the scratches. If you can find someone in your area with some Glas Weld equipment it is your best shot.

So Glassman, a windshield with lots of small pits can be saved? I'm talking hundreds if not thousands of tiny pits. How close to a new looking windshield can you get? Is the strength of the windshield reduced? I remember reading that airbags some how use the windshield as part of the system.
