One layer of Collinite 476s

hi guys,

first off, i'd like to say this is a great forum. Last week, I removed some off my swirls with meguiar's swirl remover with a PC. Afterwards, I put on some glaze by hand. I finished off with one layer of Collinite 476s. I know that this isn't a full detail, but it was my first time using a PC. The main purpose of that day was for people to tell me how to use a PC. My questions are the following:

1. how long is the one layer of collinite going to last for?

2. If it is necessary, what should I do to add another layer?

3. Should I do a full detail with compounding, etc, before winter hits?

4. Can compounding + wrong PC technique = damaged car? (i've only used a PC once)

it's my first post, so please direct me in the right way?

thank you

henry

1. One layer of Collinite should last 2-3 months without a problem. If you put a new layer on after your next wash, and do it again, the 3 layers should give you the maximum approximate protection of 6 months.

2. To add another layer, just clean the surface, and apply second layer.

3. I would do the polishing, compounding (only if you need it) after the winter. During the winter, there's salt, snow, and all that stuff that may mar your paint finish. Do the polishing in the spring.

4. Compounding usually isn't necessary. Some polish applied worked on with the PC will do a fine job. Compounding may leave marring and swirling.

You're asking great questions. Welcome to Autopia, and hope everything goes well.

One layer of 476 can go a long time depending on enviroment and use. I find the life of many waxes is reduced by applying a glaze first though.

Sounds like you did a nice job, good choice of products too. I sure wouldn't repolish/etc. now, I'd try to keep ahead of the deterioration of the wax you already have on there.

I'd just put another coat (or two) of the 476S on it. Maybe do a panel or two after each wash, that way you'll soon have *plenty* of protection on there and it won't be a huge job all at once.

No way to say how long a single coat of 476S will last, but it'll be a while ;) But I still like having 2-3 layers of it myself. Easy to add more now, while everything's still in nice condition, and the additional wax will help keep it that way.

If you wait *too* long to add more, you might want to give it a very gentle claying with Sonus Ultra-Fine (green), but that shouldn't be necessary now.

thanks for the warm welcome and sound advice!

5. will claying remove any wax?

6. **can I use a different brand of wax on top of the Collinite 476s such as mequir's nxt spray on wax?

7. would a regular wash or ONR be better before a layer of wax is applied?

Most clays will remove wax, but some members say that ultra fine clays do not remove any wax. Anyhow, I would still recommend that you wax and add a layer of protection after claying.

Yes, Meguiars NXT spray should work on top of Collinite 476S. If you want better shine and better durability, you may want to look into Duragloss Aquawax. It is a spray sealant that will prolong the protection on your paint and let it shine like crazy.

Both ONR washes and conventional washes will work before the layer of wax is applied. Your main goal is to clean the paint of any dirt particles before applying protection.
