1.432 bazillion years ago* early man had his first encounter with fire and it changed human history forever. On February 15th 2014 I had my first encounter with the Metro DataVac Electric Duster and it changed my life forever.
I planned on working on my personal computers at home this weekend, so I thought it would be the perfect time to put the DataVac to the test. Here's what I would be working on.
I started with my work keyboard. This is a Das Model S Ultimate with Cherry MX Blue switches. Keyboards can get VERY dirty, and if your willing to risk losing your lunch; do some research on the types of bacteria that your dirty keyboard could be holding.
To the naked eye and the average joe, my keyboard looks normal.
If we take a closer look, we can see the true condition of the dirt that has built up inbetween the keys. Keep in mind I clean my keyboards regularly, if you don't....your keyboard is likely dirtier than mine.
I wanted to detail my keyboards to "Autopian Standards", so I started by removing the keycaps. Check with your keyboard manufacturer before you start pulling on your keycaps. I have a mechanical keyboard, not a standard membrane style keyboard so I don't have any problems removing the keycaps.
I used a keycap puller provided by my keyboard manufacturer.
The puller makes it very easy. Removing the keycaps reveals the Cherry MX Blue switches. :rockon
Coming along nicely...
The aftermath of using this keyboard every day.

I sampled some of the crumbs and tasted Cajun Peanuts, Hot Fries and subtle notes of Cheez It's.
I opened the DataVac and found plenty of accessories.
I found the included Micro Detailing Tool Kit to be the most useful for cleaning the keyboards.
Very ergonomic as the On/Off switch is located where your thumb would naturally rest.
:USA:USA
The Micro Cleaning Tool was a perfect fit.
The DataVac was POWERFUL and was much easier to use than compressed air out of a can. Here are the results of only using the DataVac.
With Aerosol cans of compressed air, I always found myself being very careful with how much I used. Cans of compressed air can get expensive and have limited working time. Use the can too much and it gets cold, lowering the output pressure. Then, there's always the risk of the can shooting out WATER. Last time I checked, electronic manufacturers never recommended shooting your electronic devices with water. With the Metro DataVac, I had a seemingly unlimited source of powerful filtered air, without any worry of shooting water.
I wiped each keycap individually before reinstalling on the keyboard with a clean all purpose microfiber towel and BLACKFIRE All-In-One All Purpose Cleaner.
Much better.
Required reflection shot.
I've been cleaning out computers and computer hardware for years and I'm ashamed to calculate how much money I've thrown away on cans of compressed air. I'm proud to add another tool to my detailing arsenal that's Made in the USA.
