I want to repaint it, and Ive done rims before, but do I take off all the old paint? or do i just sand on top? And Im looking for a paint with a close metallic look...any suggestions?

THanks

What i have done is just have the wheels professionally done, it is cheaper than new wheels and trying DIY this sort of thing is a real PITA. IMO the kits are not that good and the clear yellows very quickly. I think when they refinish them, they wash them in an acid wash sort of process to chemically remove everything and prep it for paint.

I could be wrong but they might media blast them first, then paint. Pretty hard to paint too.

Man I'd take it to Mercedes and tell them that it reflects poorly on their quality!! They may be able to give you new rims or help pay for a repaint.

Mercedes are not what they were in the days with the cars with the square headlamps.

This is a common problem i have seen, weather its done by damage of wheel cleaners or not i cant tell. But certantly Merc wheels seem to peel, the AMG branded ones from the 1998-2004 seem esp. prone to this.

Do not take the wheels to the Benz Dealership. BIg $$$$ there. Locate a local company that will remove the flaking or blast them resurface and paint. This is the best way to do this!

Wurth has a kit that contains a solvent cleaner, the paint and clear coat. You would have to lightly sand the rim and go from there.

Hmm well the rim is a replacement that a body shop gave in an accident, should be OEM but I dont know...

They probably re-finished it...and didn't do a very good job. Is it clearcoat that's peeling or paint? I can't really tell.

FWIW, we've had a dozen+ Benzes and I've never seen this happen...even with my wife curbing her wheels on a weekly basis.

Probably going to have it done by those people, only thing is finding the time to get up to LA and back during their hours...

Thanks for the advice.

It seems like the actual paint, because underneath its metallic feeling.

don't waste your time doing it yourself. in my area wheel repair guys do great work for about 100!$ pay someone to do it right. it only takes about an hour or two plus color match is difficult on a do it yourself kit
