Meguiars Mirror Glaze #16

As I think I've mentioned on here, I'm a big fan of Zymol. I read good things about Meguiars and ordered a couple of tins. Today I used it on my Z4 and I'm not thrilled with the results. The shine isn't as good as my Zymol shines usually are, and after hand-buffing twice with terry cloths, the surface doesn't feel slippery. This was a simple wash and shine, using Meguiars soap (which, btw, one of my neighbors stole while I wasn't looking :angry ), and then I applied one thin coat using a microfiber towel and buffed it with two terry towels. Is there a trick to using this stuff?

Apply a thin coat and remove it every other panel. Example: Apply it to the fender and door and then remove it from the fender. Apply it to the second door/rear 1/4 panel and then remove it from the first door...... When done this way it's pretty easy to remove.



#16 is a heavy paste unlike the Zymol products. Don't be surprised that it's not as thick but the durability between the two wont compare with the #16 being superior.
 
That's pretty much how I did it. I split the hood in half, but other than that I worked fender/door/trunk/rear fender etc. The wax wasn't difficult to remove, though my Zymol paste buffs off easier, just the feel was weird.

#16 definitely has a 'thicker' feel when you remove it and it doesn't really darken paint the way some other carnaubas do. It just makes the paint wetter and glossier without otherwise changing the look you get after polishing. If you want to deepen the paint, #26 is a better choice, although #16 will last longer.
 
#16 IMO wouldnt be a wax I would go to from Zymol for looks, yes I think it looks ok, but alot of people on here used it for its protection/durabilty. Its gies a clear look and maintais the appreance off thepaint/products below it. From my experience lots off other products look better.
 
It sounds like you have some kind of contamination on the surface. #16 is a pure wax, not a cleaner/wax (the blue liquid Zymol is a cleaner/wax). The surface must be pristine to start with if you want maximum slickness and gloss.



As a minimum I would wash and clay before applying #16 but washing, claying and using a cleaner would be best.

The contamination might be it. I got the car yesterday from a dealership in Iowa and was sprucing it up after the 300+ mile drive home. It felt smooth enough, so I didn't go whole hog.



I've don't have the liquid Zymol. I've only got their soap and paste wax from a place called Emmons Coachworks that closed a while back; I didn't use it because it's the Creame for light cars, and I worried what it'd do to the black Z.



Thinking back on it, I do remember the recommendations for #16 mentioned it's durability. I think I was talking about a more durable wax for winter. Maybe I'll save it for the 325i, when I'll appreciate it once the snow flies.

As others have said, put it on thin and take it off right away, well, that's how I use it anyway. I really like the look of #16 myself, gives a really wet and glossy appearance which looks awesome on well prepared black.

Like the others have mentioned, the #16 is a pure wax, no cleaners at all and as such will look it's best on a properly prepped surface. The end results depend almost entirely on the work done immediately prior to its application. Depending on how much build-up of older wax you have on your car, maybe a good paint cleaner to strip all the 'old' off the car before applying the #16 may be in order. Here is a pic of my screaming bananna after a full claying and Megs #82 Swirl Free Polish followed by a thin, PC applied coat of #16:

Not to thread hijack, but does anyone find Souvrean to be as durable as # 16? I have Souvrean for over 2 months now, and it is going strong. I have used s100 and it's lasts about 3 or 4 weeks max.



Has anyone had this same observation?

Not even close. I switched from Souveran *to* #16 on my wife's Audi because of the difference. No comparison at all, I'm talking months as opposed to weeks.



Oh, and note that Souveran is sorta shampoo-sensitive whereas you can pretty much wash #16 with Dawn without stripping it.



But of course YMMV :D
