Ok, I tried out my bar of Detailer Clay D-6100 today. It is a 200g bar with a case to keep it in for about $22. I cut off about 1/6 of it to use. I washed my car first, spraying it down with 64:1 APC+ to help strip off the ~3 week old coat of #26. Then I washed the car with #00. I dried it off and pulled it into the garage. I used Final Detail as the lubricant for the clay.
On first removing the clay from the plastic, it has a fairly sticky feel to it. It is about as sticky as Quik Clay but a fair bit softer. I would describe it as soft and sticky. It also doesn't have any real smell to it. I started claying the car and noticed that it is quite easy to use. It doesn't grab or streak as you would expect from a sticky clay (or as I would expect from having used Quik Clay). It really does a good job and the softness makes it easy to manipulate. The one or two times it left mild streaking, it was easily removed with another pass of the clay. No rubbing the streak out was required.
The clay does soften up a bit the more you use it, and since I clayed the whole car, it did start to get a bit soft. However, it was still perfectly usable when I was done. My fingers didn't fare as well, though. As the bar softened, it started to leave clay on my fingertips. By the end, they were pretty yellow (the clay is yellow). It wasn't too hard to wash the clay off of my fingers, but it did take some rubbing and a lot of hand soap and warm water. So that was a bit of a nuisance. I also probably used a good 6 oz. of Final Detail to clay the entire car (though my car is not small).
All in all I like the clay. It was very easy to use, and I personally prefer a soft clay to a hard one. It just seems like a softer one would be safer as it could squish around grit a little more. And being a bit sticky means it can be a bit more mild (as it can rely on the "stick" to help remove stuff instead of relying as much on the sheering of the clay). But that could all be in my head. Is the clay worth the $22? Is it the best clay? I can't really say. I would like to try out Clay Magic which has a 100g bar and 12 oz. of lube for about $10-11. What I can say that this is a clay bar I wouldn't mind using all the time. There is nothing really objectionable about it, it is easy to use, and it gives good results. If it were the only clay bar I could get, I wouldn't be upset about it.
