Meguiars Clay bar kit review

In bed with your wife
After reading a post yesterday that Advance Auto is carrying the Meguiar Smooth Surface™ Clay Kit, I thought this was a perfect opportunity for me to try out a clay bar and not lose out if I didn't like it.

I have nothing else to compare it to but I was very impressed with the results. I tried it out on my hood, trunk and bumpers. I was more than pleased when the surfaces were glass-like as promised.

The kit has two bars (can't remember the sizes), a case for the bars, 16 ounces of Quick Detailer which is used as the lubricant, a sample of Cleaner Wax, and a full-sized Supreme Shine™ Microfiber towel!

At $17.77, I think this was a good deal for the newcomer such as myself.

After I 'clayed' my hood, then used Finish 2001 as the polish, I used the Cleaner Wax. I was slightly disappointed that my water spots are still there but not quite as visible and the surface is better than it was brand new!

I'm certainly going to keep using this method and will be purchasing bars from other manufacturers to see how well they all work.

I'm hooked!

I've used Meg's clay kit in the past and been happy with the results. I bought a Pinnacle clay kit to try this weekend.

Ahh this reminds me of the day when I used my first claybar. It was a Meguiar's kit...and afterwards I used Mothers Carnauba Cleaner Wax. I remember how amazed I was at the smoothness, but the car still looked like crap from all of the wax in the cracks, LOL.

Anyways, enough rambling...glad your results were good. Clay definitely comes in handy.

What is better using meguiar's scratch X on my fine swirl marks or that meguiar's clay bar kit. I want to take out those damn ugly swirls.

using a Claybar will only remove IFO (industrial Fall Out) and if not used properly it may even cause marring. The Meguiars Scratch X will help in removing swirls and in some instance i have had some good results with scratch X .

i heard that it removes everything from your paint. Including swirls. Thats the whole purpose of a claybar is to smooth out the paint to a flawless finish.

It will smoth out the paint.. but any swirls will still be there.. you still need to polish those out.. if you didn't clay you would only be polishing around the crap that was on there. and it would take you longer to polish

Patrick is right,

All clay does is removes the gritiness on your paint, and leaves a very smooth surface. Reach for the polish/compound to remove any scratches and swirls.

It will also leave behind water spots. I noticed SOME of mine are gone but for the most part, they weren't removed with the clay (as I expected).

Probably the water spots etched your clear coat. The only way to remove these is with polishing.
