Leather Lubricant? (Seats making creaky noises)

Hello everyone.

First of all, thanks to the moderators and owner of this site. It's really awesome. I just bought one of the cars that I've always wanted to own and really want to take care of it. I was able to borrow a PC polisher and I went to town on my older car (Accord) which had crazy oxidation on the hood. Now the hood looks better than the trunk, which I used to think was shiny!!!

Anyway, in my M3, i've noticed creaky noises coming from the leather. I'm assuming it's from leather+leather rubbing against itself. Is there any kind of lubricant I can use to avoid this annoying sound?

Best Regards,

Donovan

There is a good chance that it's the leather rubbing on plastic (surrounds for the hinges, adjusters, etc.). My CST Leather is horrible about this. The only solution I've found (which isn't a good one) is to put very very thin coat of grease on the edges of the plastic surrounds where they meet the leather. That's what the dealership told me to do, and it's the only think that seems to work. And when I say 'thin', I mean put a tiny bit on the edge of a rag wipe it on, and then wipe almost all of it off. Lasts for about 3 months.

Donovan, do you use a leather conditioner? I'd suggest using that to lubricate the rubbing surfaces.

The oils and silicones it contains should act as an effective lubricant, without damaging the leather.

If the squeaks against the plastic surfaces, the same should work.

Paul, no I haven't conditioned the leather although I guess I will give it a try now. I just wasn't sure if a conditioner was enough of a lubricant for that creaky sound. Thanks for the suggestions guys. My first leather car :)

I've tried leahter conditioner for this problem (pick a brand). It works for a few days and then apparently soaks in (as it is supposed to do), and the problem reappears. Incidentally, this is why MB uses MB-Tex on the lower areas of the seats vs. real leather-MB-Tex won't squeak against the plastic surrounds.

Bummer... I'm wondering, will silicon grease damage the leather? That stuff lasts a long time in terms of lubricant. and smells cleaner than petroleum based greases.

Give the conditioner a try-it won't hurt anything. What works for you may not work for me and vice versa. I don't think any of the things discussed on here are absolute-just people posting their own experiences. I tried the leather conditioner first and had no success, so I stepped it up and eventually took it to the dealer to see what to do. That's when I found out they just grease the edges of the plastics.

Astroglide! :). I'd probably end up using that and reapplying every once in a while, honestly. I'm sure white lithium would solve it permenantly, but I'd worry about that messing up the leather.

run to a coach store, yup as in the women's handbag maker, and buy their leather moisturizer, $8. it's what i use on steering wheels and seats. it totally rejuvenates leather and gives it a soft slick finish. it should do the trick.
