I've Got The Bug

First time poster, first time detailer here. I've recently bought a new Mazda MX5 & started looking for some gear to keep it spic 'n' span. Stumbled across this site & discovered a whole new world, it's certainly a step up from a quick rub down with a sponge & a bit of Fairy Liquid.

This week-end I've done my first mini-detailing job on the Mazda & enjoyed every bit of doing it. Here's what I've used, I'd welcome any comments;

Pinnacle Shampoo, Megs lambswool mit & 2 buckets

Sonus ultra-fine clay

Sonus paintwork cleanser

3 x coats of Klasse SG

3 x coats of Chemcal Guys XXX carnuaba paste

I only allowed 4 hours between coats of Klasse which I now understand isn't enough (doh !) with 24 hours before using the XXX. That said, the finish is fantastic (by my normal standards), very glossy & wet with great reflection.

My only real problem now is I want to try every conceivable combination of products (I'm already looking at other sealant / wax combinations). I aslo feel the urge to get a PC, feel free to talk me in to it. How do you folks reign yourselves in ? I can see me sending a fortune over the next few years. :woot2:

I managed to "restrain" myself at least a little bit once I saw my credit card bill, and the ensuing lower balance in my check account :o

lol but yea man, it is addictive! congrats on the new car

I feel ya. I just got a PC and am in the home stretch of a full detail on my car. So far I've invested about 14 hours with a couple more to go finishing up on the interior. It's tiring, but man does the car look good! It's not perfect yet, still a lot of scratches that I couldn't quite tackle, but the car is now just about swirl free and looks great. Yes it is a big hit to the pocketbook with all the stuff you need, but if you can swing it without sacrificing it's worth it.

Slow down buddy, LOL The Klasse is a very nice product, the changes are mostly subtle with other sealants, but ease of use is quite different. Let the products settle in before you make other choices.

Welcome to Autopia!

Don't be too quick to assume you should've waited longer on the KSG layers. Yeah, I and many others wait longer, but the jury's still out on exactly how long it really takes before you can add more. If it looks good, and holds up well, then everything is fine.

Heh heh, some people never tire of doing this stuff and never do rein themselves in :D Have fun, the initial forays into serious detailing are often the most fun you'll ever have with it.

Besides the PC, check out the Cyclo polisher, which some of us prefer ;)

Oh, BTW and FWIW, I dunno if they're reformulated it, but the Pinnacle Bodywork Shampoo, which does have great lubricity and a nice smell, always seemed pretty hard on my wax/sealants....enough so that I quit using it. If this happens to you, I recommend the Griot's Car Wash, which seems to have all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of the Pinnacle.
