In middle of a detail - tried s34a, then 2000 grit wet sand; still no joy

Hello,

Im in the middle of a 3 day detail on an Integra - 1993 GSi. The car was repainted 6 years ago.

Ive tried s34a with a wool pad up to 1800 rpm on my makita (3 applications), followed with PO19J on a Ryobi Yellow Pad, and finished with Soft white pad using po85rd.

It removed most of the swirls from this picutre

However, the was still swirls. So, I broke out some 2000 grit wet dry, which again had minimal effect. Swirls still there.

The swirls aren't from the wool pad. The swirls look exactly the same as they did when I started. I don't think they are under the clearcoat from the respray.

Any advice for next stage? Move to 1500 grit?

Yeah 2000 grit should have made at least a noticeable difference in the appearance of the swirls. Its possible they are underneath, ive seen it a few times.

Looks to me like 1st stage failure... my GTP has the same thing on its spoiler, swirls that no amount of polishing seems to fix, along with a pronounced dullness and shift towards grey. The edge of the hood in the 2nd shot is particularly telling.

Thanks for the replies.

D&D Auto Detail and swirlnuts: yeah, dep down i knew these swirls are under the respray - just trying to kid myself

themightytimmah: well spotted. thanks, i have extra to cover myself when I tell the client this eveninf.

Almost Finished. Still need another day to FP and deal with the severely faded trim

The temperature was in the 90s but with the humidity it felt like 110. Menzera required almost consistent sprizting.

The car was a nightmare to do. 2 layers of swirls - under the clearcoat from a bad respray, looked like the painter had used a rotary with a wool pad to flatten out the previously failed clear coat but not followed up with a FF. On top of that, the newish clearcoat had severe swirls and RDS's.

This made it very difficult to know which layer of swirls I was working on. Only with a collection of oddly placed halogens was I able to separate the upper layer swirls from the lower. To make thing worse, the respray clearcoat was ROCK hard.

Process

Pre-wash and wash with Sonax Gloss

Eagle One A-Z Tyre cleaner with scrubbing brush

Clayed with Surluster Yellow and 1:5 Sonax Gloss/Water mix

Meg Endurance tyre dressing - 2 coats top with EA2 Tyre dressing for better spread

Light wash to clean aftrer clay.

2000 grit wet sand - complete car

S34a with wool pad x 3

P091J with Ryobi Yellow cut pad ; 1-2 passes

PO85J with Ryobi Yellow 1 passes, then with Ryobi White Soft 1 pass

CG Paint cleanser

Fusio 9month sealant LSP

Lots of Key sctraches

Flat paint. Serve swirls under paint can be see at the top of the sun reflection

Under the halogen. Top layer of swirls can be seen. Also, can just make out the finer layer of swirls under the clearcoat.

On to wetsand. Had tried s34a with wool x 3 but not joy - rock hard clearcoat. used 2000 grit

Next, the bonnet, which was the worst of all. Deep RDS all over. I think the owner had tried to remove the swirls under the clearcoat with a compound and a towel. Wetsanded the entire bonnet plus RDS areas

After: The sun was setting and the lack of bright sunlight flatters the paint as it does not show the servely swirled paint under the clearcoat. It does show the work I did on the top clearcoat though.

Door after - 95% of key scratches removed but FF need as holograms still present from the wool pad

finally,

This car was a nightmare to do. Four days in total and still another day needed.

This is the first time Ive come across swirls under the clearcoat. If I see this again in any future jobs, I think I will decline the work. It just isnt worth doing.

OK the car looks a lot better, but in bright sunlight you can clearly see the swirls under the clear coat and worst of all, there's nothing i can do about it.

Live and learn.

Holy mother of swirls Batman! Dude nice work. I wasn't expecting to see after pix that good. That's cool that you kept working it even though you could've bailed on the car. Wow... very nice. :bigups
