H.I.D. Light Kit

i have a 2004 crown vic sport, all stock and i was looking to add something that would help it stand out just a little bit from other crown vic's (besides the rims and decklid it looks just about the same). in the past ive heard about these H.I.D. lights and ive seen them on bmw's and stuff but i heard if you want one you have to do all sorts of electrical work to it and even if you got the bulbs and stuff it would still melt your headlight housing because it gets so incredibly hot. the other day i googled it and found this interesting site that sells kits that have the housing. the thing runs for a little over $1,400 but the headlights look beautiful if you ask me. heres a link:

just scroll down until you see the one for the 98-04 crown vic. i had a few questions about this kit and i was wondering if any one on here could answer them. first of all i would like to know how dependable this kit would be and how hard it would be to install. im thinking of taking it to this shop pretty close to here to get it done. i would also like to know what else i would have to do to my crown vic to get this working right and what else i would have to buy to install this and get it to work right. i was also wondering where i can get replacement H.I.D. bulbs for it and how long they last.

As long as you get a good plug n' play kit than you can install it yourself. Its really easy, I installed them in my truck, all you need is a little planning for your ballast location. $1,400 is WAY to much, you can probably get OEM HIDs fitted in your car for that price. I know Jngrbrdman got a really good deal on HID kits and offered it to everyone here, might wanna search or PM him. I believe his kit was plug n' play too.

yea im pretty sure the ballasts and bulbs and stuff would only cost a few hundred but the custom housing and stuff is the reason its so expensive. i was just wondering how dependable they are and what i should do before installing them besides finding out where to mount the ballasts.

Once you graduate to HIDs you will never look back! My Lincoln has them, it was the first production car to use HIDs (despite what the Germans claim!) and they really do make a huge difference.

I'd go to the Crown Vic forums (there are several) and ask there, they will surely have lots of info.

You don't need to get all new headlight housing for HIDs. It would probably be better, but isn't necessary. I had my HID kit in reflector headlights (similiar to yours) and they looked great. Just make sure the HID bulbs come with a cutoff shield, to prevent unwanted glare. Quality differs from company to company. I see plenty of cheap eBay kits with a headlight out all the time. My HID kit came with OEM Hella ballasts and pretty good bulbs. I've had my HID kit in my truck for a year(took them out cuz i sold it), but if a bulb ever burnt out I would defin replace it. The light output of HID is incredible and is definately worth it.

I would be worried about glare on reflector headlights that aren't desinged for HIDs. Check out this link. It shows what your HIDs could end up looking like.

That kind of glare is dangerous to oncoming traffic and just doesn't look good. Projector lenses are safer to directly plug in HIDs to, but they still have some glare issues. You have to have good projectors to pull of a safe HID cutoff patern without modifying the light. Even with projectors it may be necessary to do some modification. This thread has my HID conversion pictures in it. I was worried about glare, but it seems to be ok. I would need to do a little modification to get the nice blue cutoff line, but this works for me and I don't think there is any glare that would be hazardous to oncoming drivers.
