Good carpet shampoo?

You will want a dedicated carpet shampoo as opposed to an APC. Usually APC's have high ph which can cause carpet stiffness and quick re-soiling. The ph of carpet shampoo should be no more than 9-10ph. TOL's rug renew is a great product, although I use it in an extractor. Another option is a foaming cleaner which is good because the carpet does not get very wet. Stoner's Carpet and Upholster cleaner comes to mind.

I just used some DP Interior and Upholstery Cleaner yesterday on a detail for a couple small spots... worked awesome, and I didn't even use an extractor. Plus, the smell is great.

I have heard great things about the BioKleen TLC stuff, though.

DP foamed pretty well for just using a brush, once you agitate it. It won't come out as foam, just a mist. But once you start working it in, it foams up.
