Cleaning California Car Duster

From Autogeek.net: "Caring for your duster is easy... simply shake out the duster before and after each use. Should your duster ever become so dirty that it requires and actual cleaning, just wash it in cold water with a mild detergent and let it air dry."

Since the 'magic' of the duster is in the specially baked on paraffin wax, I would definitely err on the side of using an extremely mild detergent, or simply immersing it in water and agitating it briskly. One of the main marketing claims (similar to K&N air filters) is that it works better the dirtier it gets...well, at least up the point right before it is harmfully dirty. I guess you will just have to judge how close you want to get to that line.

I tried washing with mild detergent, worked OK, but there is nothing like a new one, with the proper coatings on it to pick up ALL the loose dust etc. on the surface.

I've yet to know of anyone who cleaned it successfully.....seems like it's just not quite the same afterwards. I wonder if Woolite would work?

I don't think it is worth the effort as the fibers can not really be "cleaned" because the coating (paraffn) can't be penetrated. Not without messing it up at least. The best advice they give is simply to shake it real well (and often). I've had two dusters and the first lasted a couple of years before I decided to buy another. They are only ten bucks so when I think it is just too dirty to use I simply buy another.
