Cheap Claybar Alternative?

If you google around, you will find some folks using blu tack as a claybar alternative and with some success. I was wondering if anyone here tried using it as I am not sure if those other reports are real...

Is there any difference between claybar and blu tack?

I know play-doh and plasticine will disintegrate in water or become a gooey mess... but blu tack does stay in shape even when it is stretched when wet... so it seemed to me like it may not be just a rumour???

Any comments?

Blue Magic clay is cheap enough and so easy to use that I don't know why anyone would consider an alternative.....can't be much cheaper and then you don't have to worry since it has been proven effective time and again.

no... it is those blue sticky plasticine kids use in school to stick things on the notice board... or to stick party decorations on the wall...

There was a thread maybe 4 years ago that talked about using this, not quite as good, but some success with it. Good luck with the search.

EDIT: Heh, I found it pretty easy: http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-detailing/36631-alternative-detail-clay.html

all around 100g quantity

Blue magic clay - $12

Blu tack - $5

3M adhesive putty - $2

Misc Brand adhesive putty - $1 to $1.50

The Blue magic clay's color looks suspiciously similar to blu tack though...

Someone posted this in rovers forum...

"yes bluetak works great, i have used it for months, the secret to make it glide over your paint and pick up particals of dirt and other nasties is to add a very small pinch of flour and a drop of vinegar, work it in and then make it into a 2 by 2 inch square, then just use a paint lube to help slide over the paint, just as good as clay, if not better and far far cheaper, proper clay has vinegar and and natural lime mixed into it, give it a go and u will be amazed. "

An amatuer used it... results of course amatuerish...

If you google enough, there is one who even claimed he used blu tack for his Bristol auto-show cars...

Hmm.... just unsure whether to take the plunge...

i used 3D's nano prep towel, forgot what it cost but it can rinsed and cleaned 20 or 30 times i'm told, it really is easy to use and does a great job.

Why go so cheap? At the least buy some decent Blue Magic clay. Why risk damaging your vehicle for a few bucks?
