Carfax Info?

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
I'm wondering if anyone gets these and are the useful, accurate, etc?

You can get one for about 20 bucks and was thinking about it.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

I think they're pretty useful, although I wouldn't trust them 100% complete. I've heard stories of people getting into accidents, and it still showing up clear. I got one when I bought my car, and it checked out clean, and once I did a "physical examination" of my car; checking for color variations among panels, unaligned OP, panels not aligning correctly or anything else that looked off, I felt pretty confident in my purchase. My car was also certified by Acura so that helped too.

I do believe theres a newer service like that, which is suppose to be better, although I don't know what its called.

Thanks I think for 20 bucks is no big deal I have the car already would just like to see what had been done so that I can get a better idea moving forward

I just got one done for my mother on a used car that she was buying for my brother. It came back with all kinds of useful information, including other states that the car had been registered in, and also the un-disclosed fact that the person my mother bought the car from was not in fact the original owner, but that she had bought the car from the original owner. With that little fact she was able to get the car for $1000 less than the person was asking for it.
Little details like that are what makes Carfax useful.

Go onto ebay motors and take a look at some of the newer cars, I'm sure it won't take long to find one with a link to a free carfax report on it. That'll give you a good idea as to what sort of info you can expect from one. Great for finding out where the vehicle has been registered, how many owners, and what process it went through to end up at the dealership you're seeing it at. (One that I was looking at had gone through 3 dealerships and 2 auctions before ending up at the one that was listing it.)

I was lucky and was able to get a free (full) report, and found it to be fairly accurate, but I have heard from other people I know that not all the information on their report was completely accurate. But it is a way to get a good base. When I look for my next car I would get another one, even if I do have to pay for it.

Thats about the only thing it is good for. Finding out where its been. Your chances of finding out it was in a wreck are slim. If it wasn't reported to the insurance its most likely not gonna be on there. Which makes it a waste of money IMO.

I did one on a truck i used to own that i knew was in a wreck and it wasn't on there.

The detailed report is worth the money. The freebies don't tell you a lot.
I have subscribed in the past and have also been fortunate enough to find a friend that was able to run one for me.
All told, I have run them on 6 vehicles, three of which I bought new. The information on those was correct so I have no reason to think the information on the others was not correct as well.
Money well spent before you buy and when you have one to sell.

I would have to believe that because of the amount of cars we have in the US, keeping track of all there activities would be an impossible task...However I'm talking about a fairly new car (1999) and one that I have the original owners name in the owners manual....My reason for this is to look at anything that has happened to the car and for 20 bucks that's not much for it.....thanks all for the input it's what makes this site fun to post at!
