bondo on bumpers

i've recently taken over an 02 wrx. on the rear bumper next to the lic. plate there is a nice 2" x 1/2" chip/gouge, probably from a flatbed tow truck (imagine you took a chisel to it at 87 degrees). for whatever reason, i've drummed up a certain amount of confidence, and will attempt to repair it in the spring.

i wanted to ask for any experience people have had w/ bondo filler and spot putty. i've never worked w/ the stuff before, but i was thinking about attacking it in this manner:

use body filler to fill in a majority of it

flatten w/ a spatula and fill w/ spot putty

sand filler w/ various grits

prime, paint and clear from paintscratch.com

3m fcrc

3m smr

is there anything blatantly wrong w/ this method? is there anything wrong w/ using bondo on the urethane bumper? am i out of my league trying to take on this project myself?:nono

thx

I would look for a filler intended for flexible plastic bumpers. Bondo isn't very flexible, and could crack and flake off if anything bumps into the bumper, of if you hit a bump too hard. I'm not too sure about product names, but there shoule be at least a couple of people here that know. You might also want to ask a body shop what they use for those types of repairs, if you're lucky, they might actually tell you.

Yep, you cannot use bondo on a urethane bumper, because it WILL crack if flexed.

Talk to a body shop supplier and he will steer you towards an epoxy based filler that is matched to your particular surface.

Best of luck. :)

Dynatron makes a filler for urethane bumpers. It is a two part epoxy system that is flexible.

thx to everyone for pointing out the epoxy filler. is there anything blatantly wrong w/ my approach? any tips i should keep in mind while doing this?

Dont know what kind of results you're going to get, but you're definately looking at a whokle new bumper cover from a bodyshop if you go that route, so why not give it a shot?
