Black mats looking very "faded"

I have the OEM mats from my car. It's a 04 but low mileage. The rear/passenger mats are clean and the black looks good. The drivers side looks very dusty/faded. I used some carpet cleaner, water and vacuumed it several times. I do not own an extractor so I cannot do a full saturation cleaning. I had rubber mats on top in the winter. The place were your foot sits on the floor is worn, but that's to be expected. What can I do try and revive them? I'm thinking to soak them with the hose/high pressure wash them at the coin op. Let them dry and see.

Try some automotive upholstry cleaner from Auto Zone or Advanced, use the hose to wash the mat off and let it air dry. You may need to clean it more than once to bring the "life" back.

If you opt to go to the coin wash, some of them have carpet cleaning machines there(at least the nicer ones do).

A third option would be the next time you have your car serviced at the dealer, assuming you do, ask if the detail department could do a quick clean on the mat.

Good luck.

I cleaned up my black mats in my car using a Bissell Little Green Machine and 303 Carpet Cleaner with hot water. It took me quite a few passes before the water came out "clean". I must have dumped at least 7 containers of black and brown water before it started coming out clear(er). Mats are back to black again!

It's amazing how much dirt and other junk gets in your mats. I tried the high pressure wash method and that didn't help, at all.

Ground in dirt and the friction from your feet will cause fading, as it damages the mat. Also rubber mats can leech dye onto carpet mats.

I find the easiest to clean mats are to wet them with water and then spray on a good APC and then scrub them. Rinse with a hose or PW from a distance. If really dirty reapply the APC and scrub, then rinse until water runs clear.

The pressure sprayer at the coin op can really blast out the dirt Just make sure you don't have too narrow a spray as you could get "lines" of squashed fibers. Otherwise it should work well. A pre-spray and brushing to loosen the grime before spraying should help remove even more.
