Best polishing compond?

Well, I'm in the process of purchasing the Flex XC 3401 and I need to know the best compound money can buy. Thanks in advance!

Depends on what car you're polishing.

I've found that FPII was perfect with one car, 106FA on one, and yet oddly enough 106FF with another.

Once I found that Presta UCC with purple wool finished down like a mirror.

But if I had to brush a broad stroke like that, I'd say 106FF is the rockstar.

I have to agree with Wren on this one; I personally would use PO85RD or FPII for that particular paint as you'll get some excellent results. From a compound perspective, I've got many products to recommend, however, for a polish, these two finishing polishes are IMO some of the best in the business but come at a cost.

Note, it's been awhile since i've checked my supplier of PO85RD (shipped in from Europe) but looks like PakShak has some:

Menzerna Ceramiclear Final Finish PO85RD 32 oz

I'd buy more but i want to say I have 3/4 of a gallon left..... :grinno: :buffing:

If you're planning on doing significant correction on an M3 of that vintage (I have a '97) I'd absolutely get some M105. IME it works well on that paint via Flex.

Correct,

As accumulator mentioned, if you need to do some paint correction, I'd start off with M105 (I personally havn't tried it as this seems to be a "new" product in the rave here so I placed an order to give it a whirl), then polish.

So who can tell me the best compound and the best polish money can buy. People are mentioning different types, but I don't know if it is a compound or polish. Please help, and I appreciatte your patience with me.

Yes, I want to do some paint correction. I have swirls and minor scratches I need to remove. I also want to remove minimal clear as possible.

Never knew that Accum... you're family now haha... I have a dakar 99 coupe.. huge E36 nut here.

Oh and +1 on the M105 recommendation, clear's hard as a rock on these cars (unless it's schwartz II/plain black, as some of those are very soft... had it on my 98 328i)

Blue I suggest you read through the forums some more and so some (re)searching... do it for a week and you'll realize there's no absolute answer to your question... not only are certain products in, for example, Meguiar's line, good for certain applications, paints, etc. but when you add the various product lines you run into 15 different polishes that are "best"... unless you want to try them all and be the judge, I would suggest you take someone's recommendation and go with it for your first time... having owned a 98 328i, now a 99 M3, and having detailed a bunch of E36 M3s and 32x I would suggest Menzerna SIP as a medium polish if the car isn't in horrible shape, and 106ff as finishing... if it hasn't been taken care of properly since the late 90s, chances are you'll find a need for M105 as well. so M105, SIP and 106ff would be my picks for an E36. Good luck

So M105 is the compond correct? And best polish?

Yes M105 is compound if you want to use those terms.

Cool, thanks guys! What's also cool is a bunch of us here drive the same car. :spot

I've always been a fan of the E36's, nice cars and kept with the look of a good European car.

As lecchilo mentioned, these forums offer a wealth of information and you'll have your head spinning around in circles by the end of the week with things you'll want to try. The first yeaer I joined here, i was out nearly 1k in products..

You'll find so many products considered "best" some for certain situations as each paint condition may require a different combination of pads and products. Compounds are endless and at one moment i may be using OC (Optimum Compound), or maybe some SSR3 (PoorBoys), or maybe PG (Menzerna), or for extremes, 3M. But you'll always find a ton of new products hitting the forums and popular favorites (M105 and 205 are products I saw all over the place this year and now i'll have to give it a whirl (pun intended :))

Have fun on your car and be sure to post some pics!!

So which comes first, the compund then polish correct?

Please spend some time researching how to best polish and correct paint before you venture on your own. If it was easy everyone would do it.

cheers,

GREG

FP2 and 106 are not compounds they are polishes. M105 is probably the best cutting compound. A milder choice is Optimum Hyper compound

Thanks and good advice. I won't be taking chances on my car. I have a Nissan hood I will practice on.
