Air sanding, info needed if you please?

We wetsand with the Mirka system - 2000, 3000, 4000 grit. And still block tight corners, etc

Something about WETsanding with an electric tool... just doesn't seem right.

Ya, I am trying to find Mirka Abranet and Abralon locally; no luck at all. I e-mailed Kevin Brown and am waiting to hear back, hopefully he has good news.

I'm all good with blocking corners, I've been blocking entire cars, ugh. :D

Do you use the Mirka air sander? (bulldog I think?).

Funny this came up. I'm in the process of ordering a Mirka sander and the abrasives from Kevin.

I have already sent this thread to Kevin, but just wanted to mention a few things.

The new Abranet Soft is supposed to be the best for removing orange peel. As always, the Abralon is a strong performer. The Trizact abrasives are very nice, too.

What size sander were you looking at getting? I went with the 3" because I really don't have the need for a 6" at this time.

From what I was told Airvantage makes the mirka bulldog sander. The mirka sander is composite while the airvantage is aluminum.

The bulldog you want is the MR-625 (3/32 throw) retail is $237 and they offered it to my at $165 back in March.

I was looking for a 5-6". As this point I'll take abranet, abralon, or trizact. :D

I went to Lowes again today and they have a nice variety of pneumatic and electric sanders. As for the sanding disc, I stopped by Car Quest and they had up to 1000 in stock but can order 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 at no extra charge to the consumer. For some reason they just don't stock them after 1000 grit. At least the guy working knew what the hell I was talking about. :2thumbs:

I suggest contacting your local 3M Sales Rep and asking for a demo & samples. That's 1 of the things they do all day long and don't mind helping.

Lucky dog. I think the lady I spoke with thought I was a terrorist. :p

David - good idea, thanks.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but you want to limit the throw to about 3/32's correct?

1/8 (4/32's) is going to greatly increase the risk of pigtails, from my understanding (somebody correct me if I am wrong please!).

This is something I have thought about for a while as well...

Isn't the PC like 5/32's throw?

Correct. You want to use 3/32 for best results.

I bought Ingersoll Rand as they were a little cheaper than the Mirka, Dynabrade, or Hutchins offerings:

IG 3/32" 6" DA Palm

IG 3" Mini DA Sander

I have Mirka 6" Abralon pads from 500-4000 grit. I bought most of mine from the bowling distributors on Ebay since I didn't need a case of each specific grit.

I did, however, buy a case of Indasa dry 1500 grit with foam backing which is decent but the Abralon blows it away. It leaves behind some decent pigtails.

The only 3" discs I have are Indasa and they are decent but they are dry only. I really want to try some Mirka 3" but I can't find a variety pack and I don't want to buy a case of each grit. The 3" sander is really awesome to use in those tight spots...HIGHLY recommended!

I also have a 60 gallon compressor I got off CL. It's only a single stage but it's 6.5HP/240V and puts out ~10CFM at 90psi and has a continuous duty cycle. I don't think 8gal is going to be enough whether it puts out 9CFM or not. It'll be running the whole time you are sanding.

If you get a good line on some Abranet Soft please let me know as I'm VERY interested to try this stuff out-especially the 3"! It's tough being a hobbiest and wanting the higher end abrasives since I don't want to buy a case of each grit...

I would send Kevin (iamwaxman) a message about the Mirka products. He's a great guy and I'm sure he would put something together for you.

The Abranet Soft is a very interesting abrasive and I can't wait to try it. The foam backing is about a third of the thickness of the Abralon. As far as pricing goes, it's almost the same for Abranet Soft or Abralon.
