1998 Mercedes SL 500 detail...

Clean Dean

Keep it clean !!!
One of my absolute favorite cars of the late 1990’s was the 1990 through 2002 Mercedes Benz SL class (w129). These cars exemplified to me a sports/touring drop top with sophistication and class. I detailed this 1998 model this Friday in my favorite color combo for this car in black/tan.

The car needed some attention particularly the exterior, but was still a very fine driver:

The car was washed and then clayed early that morning and a buff with Menzerna’s SIP which cut through most of the harsh wash scratches. I finished the car off with 3M Ultrafina and waxed with Collinite’s Marque d’ Elegance. Then it was time for the interior.

I would be lying if I said the interior was bad, but there was a layer of grime on the leather and door skins that was no match for Meg’s APC 20:1 and the Eurosteam 1900 Vapor Cleaner. All leather was then treated with Lexol, and trim and dash cleaned then dressed with Stoners Trim Shine. All glass cleaned with old reliable Spray Away.

I have been a Member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America, and belong to a few Mercedes Benz forums, and I get the feeling that the W129 SL Class has become a car that has lost its appeal to most enthusiasts. Most complain that the look is dated, and it is stuck between the classic lines of the W107 and the contemporary lines of the W230 SL. For me it still has a place in my heart, and hope to land one in my garage in the not too distant future.

Much improved, looks swirl free in the afters. :)

I used to do a ton of those SLs, now I hardly do any. Always liked that version.

Very nice job, and yes, those are very classic rides for sure. I just did a 06 SL500 this weekend and couldn't find a single aspect that I didn't like about the car.

Definatly one of the better cars to come out of the 90's. I'd rock it. Good job making it shine again. Hopefully it'll start turning some heads there again.

Nice detail, but to me that's the ugliest most overpriced Mercedes ever made. We just got one in at work (98 AMG sport) which I'll be detailing soon. I honestly can't understand why anyone would buy that car other than to brag about how much they spent on it. Even used, I could think off a hundred other cars I would rather buy for the $15-20k those things bring.

Great work, correction really came out well! And judging by the interior recovery I may need to invest in a steamer.

Again excellent job Dean!

Great Detail Dean! The level of paint correction on that one was superb and the interior was a night and day turnaround.

As a sort of "connoisseur" of mercedes i have to respectfully disagree. The r129 is one of the final cars that preceded the Chrysler intervention that produced tragic mistakes like the R class. Having driven a sl600 for a long period of time i can tell you that these cars do have great standing in mercedes name, the AMG versions especially. They are well built, wonderful to drive, and a pleasure to look at. Overall A great example of what mercedes is/was all about. In addition they are holding their value very well when compared to most other mercedes models.

You don't have to love the r129 but calling it the ugliest most overpriced Mercedes ever made is a little harsh don't you think?

Excellent work Dean! Just curious about the paint though... The 98 is well before the ceramic finish that they now have, but what was the paint like?

Wow, I can't believe that I found this. I am 100% sure this was the vehicle we used to own and traded in for a 2003 SL 500 in white on tan. You did an amazing job on the detail.

@ Apollo, the paint was pretty good. The car was garaged up until the late 2005. And then it became a daily driver. In 2006 the dealer put a 2-3 foot long scratch in the hood, and we had them repaint the entire hood, so the hood was in great condition, as the trunk. Only the sides had a bit of chipping (especially around seams like the gas cap) and a few scratches. But other than that, the paint still shined great and held up very well. I am glad to see that my family's old car has been restored to look this great and that someone else is enjoying it. I was very surprised about how well the interior seats cleaned up. We had neglected the exterior and not detailed it before traded in, but we knew it needed a good cleanup. We never thought the interior was nearly that filthy! Sorry if we made your detail job difficult!

You must do a lot of work for jay, and if you do, your work is amazing. I took a trip to his garage and all of his vehicles look pristine!

Question to you: I doubt you would remember as it was so long ago. But there was a stain in the patch of carpet right behind the center console that I was never able to get out despite trying everything. Were you ever successful in getting it out.

If you traded that one in with Jay, I am sure it is the one. He rarely gets in the W129 SLs anymore, and finding low mileage one with original paint are becoming quite rare. Mercedes Benz interiors are very durable, and hold up really well with fairly aggressive vapor cleaning providing you condition the leather soon after. As for the carpets, I really do not remember whether it was stained or not, but I have had a lot of success removing tough stains with vapor cleaning.

Jay has a great eye for finding hidden treasures. I have detailed some pretty amazing stuff for him over the years. Here is a car I detailed a few weeks ago for him with its new owner:
