is Sx more aggressive then #9?
scratch x - 7oz = $6.99

#9 - 16oz = 10.99


more bang for the buck with #9.... but???

While I have and use both, I don't know for sure how they compare for abrasiveness.

If I have a scratch, I use Scratch-X, if I'm working on swirls, I use #9. The Scratch-X seemed like it might be slightly more agressive, but that could have been that I was expecting it to be.

Another site once listed the Scratch-X as being slightly more abrasive than #9.
On a scale of 1 to 10, they had Meg's #9 as a 3 which is where Meguiar's rates it as well. They had the Scratch-X as a 4 which may be correct, but I have never seen anything from Meguiar's that says that.

WAZ UP DC Waz up Central i used #9 i didnt like the scratch x at all i use GIIPTONE One step its a ploish and wax in one real good with spider webing good luck c-ya
 
Scratch X is more abrasive than #9 so if you have scratches use SX if just swirls use #9 or #82
Or better yet try Poorboys SSR 2 ... It will remove some imperfections and leave a great polished surface as you work it.
 
I've used both, and I agree with CharlesW's comments. I also felt that Scratch-X worked better by hand while #9 worked better with a PC.
 
ScratchX is something I wouldn't ever use on an entire vehicle. I use it on isolated "scratches" or paint swaping. Its pretty abrasive and I definitely would put it higher than even DACP on the scale. I've tested it against DACP on paint swap and ScratchX is much better at what it does than DACP. Diamond Cut is probably closer to ScratchX in my opinion. Keep ScratchX to the scratches and leave swirls to the other products. #9 is more fillers and light polishes than a real swirl removing compound. The only time I use #9 is to follow up DACP with it to clear up some polishing haze on darker colored cars. ScratchX is waaaay more abrasive than #9. Its also most effective if used by hand on isolated scratches, door dings, and paint swapping.
 
Hmm...From what I've been reading online Audis are supposed to have very hard paint, I tried Scratch X by hand a while back on some light scratches on my A4 and it really didn't do much but on another car with softer paint it did a pretty good job. Just wanted to throw this exception about hard paint out there.
 
Hmmm.... I know I'm confused. I have a tube of ScratchX and was wondering about the use of it multiple times per year on my new car, so I sent Meguiars this E-Mail:

The Scratch X is safe for your clear coat. You can use it as often as you like without the worry of hurting your paint.

In order to get the most from Scratch X you will want to use the following technique. Apply the product in a small section no more than 2' x 2'. Work into surface for approximately 30 seconds and wipe dry. Examine the surface. Repeat as necessary. You may need to use multiple applications in order to remove the below surface defects.

I'll probably use up the tube then switch to Poorboy's SSR1/2.
 
Which is what's interesting to me - if I used, say Scratchx before every wax (say every month), that's 12x per year, or 120x over 10 years. I would think that after 120 applications, there would be little left of the clearcoat.
 
Why would you use ScratchX on the entire car every month? That is kind of overkill. Where this product is concerned I don't care what Meguiar's has to say. ScratchX is most effective when used on small isolated areas. Its not a full car treatment product. There are soooooo many other products that are actually more effective than ScratchX and much easier to use. Hang on to the tube and use it for scratches. Use something more effective on swirls for the rest of the car. I've been a ScratchX and GS27 user for several years and I've never been able to understand how people can use this on the whole car.
 
My reasoning was that I seem to always get fine spiders/swirls no matter what I do to keep them at bay. I love dark color cars, but they don't love me back! :) I was thinking that if it's safe for coninued use, it may be a good prep step before a once a month waxing. But, it's probably not a good idea, judging from this forum.

Still trying to get my regimen down for the best results.
 
Don't use a canon to kill a mosquito. Why use the most abrasive stuff in a tube when something like #9 is safe for frequent use and will help stay on top of the swirls. If you are getting marks every month that are too tough for #9 to deal with then you have some major problems in your procedure for car care. You shouldn't have that much damage on a monthly basis that requires serious polishing. Save ScratchX for the scratches and use a swirl remover for the swirls. That would be a safer way to go.
