Your camera now, or next purchase?

I currently use a Nikon D40 with a 18-105 Nikkor lens. I also have a Panasonic TZ5.

Both are suitable for my horrible photos.

I just ordered a Nikon D90 to see if something can make up for my bad skills.

What are you shooting with now or what are you buying?

I have a D40 and absolutely love it. I was thinking of getting a D90, but for the price it's not much of an honest upgrade, unless you shoot in low light and need high ISO and video. In normal light it very hard to tell between the two.

It stinks that Nikon raised the prices on all of their stuff and the D90 went up a couple hundred more.

The new D5000 will be out in a month too.

The D40 is honestly a superb camera and can take some incredible shots. It's easy to operate and lightweight. The 18-105 is also a very good lense.

Get a DVD or a book on it and learn how everything works. It's easy once you get the hang of it.

The D40 will be the easiest to operate between the two.

Nikon Rules!!!

I have the Sony A 300 for this seasons pics :D. Good luck with the D90. I haven't heard very many good reviews on it yet.

I don't know where you heard that. The D90 is one heck of an amazing camera. DXO labs rated it one of the top cameras. The low light high ISO quality is superb!

The ratings and reviews are topnotch.

It's good enough that Nikon is raising the price on it again very soon.:down

I used to have a Sony DSC-P200, and it was a heck of a point-and-shoot camera. It was dropped and broke. Now I have some piece of junk Sony that I loathe.

I hope in the near future to be able to pick up a Canon Rebel.

Every single professional camera guy I talked to about it... Figured they were all the experts. They say it's a great camera but compared to other camera's in it's class (like the cannon) it just dosen't hold up to the others. As it was put to me "With the D90 you're only buying the name not a better camera" just like you said even over the D40 it's just not that big of an upgrade. They hyped it waaay up and it feel flat in the end. It's not a junk camera by any means but it's just not worth the asking price or the hype from what I've been told. The cannon and the olympus out perform it by most preferences in the feild.

I just use a Canon. I've had a Sony and HP in the past and the Cannon I take take a ton of pictures on one charge. I usually just keep it on the auto setting and go to town. LOL

The D90 wasn't expensive at all, it will be here tomorrow.

What are the professional photographers you hang with recommending under $2,000 these days?

Canon XTI here and getting ready to get a 5D MK II..

That 5D MkII looks interesting. I was going to order it with that 580 flash and a 24-105 lens.

But I have no idea what full-frame is or why I need it even after reading a few reviews.

No built-in flash and such advanced manual controls....not for me at this stage of the game. I'd be wasting it at this point.

I question the wisdom in this strategy. These cameras are far more sophisticated than the majority of us will ever be able to take advantage of. IMO, it's very much like detailing - - the beauty of the finished product is determined by the skill level and comprehension of the operator. You can put a $15,000 camera in the hands of a Joe Average and they can still end up with crappy pictures. There's more to taking great pictures than buying the most expensive equipment.

There are some helpful books out there. Learning to See Creatively by Bryan Peterson is a good starter.

My logic to it is, EASY RESALE.

If I dont like it, I can sell it or return it easily and not be left wondering, "what if...".

I'd like a photography lesson or two, I have trouble learning cameras and computers from books.

Best thing to do is keep experimenting and understand the basics of f-stop and shutter speed. I too have a D40 and it is a wonderful little camera. I'd invest in different/faster glass before I'd move up to a D90. BTW, I love using my 1974 Nikon F2 more than I do the D40 and it has no electronics whatsoever besides a basic light meter. Have you looked into the forums on nikonians.org. Great site and the D40 section is free.

I am not sure who told you that, but that is not true. The D90 is one heck of an amazing camera. It's reviews are amazing and DXo labs proves the camera to be truely amazing. It's high iso capability, fast, very accurate auto focus, great spot metering, wireless flash system, video, live view, the list goes on. People are even trading the D300 for it.

Like Jdoria said, for under $2000 it can not be beat, let alone a body for $1000.

I never believe hearsay, only real users and real reviews.

p.s Nikon uses Sony sensors.:dance

Did you also look at the D700. That's one of my favorites!

You will be more than fine with the D90 and just play with it for a couple of days and learn it and examine what everything does hands-on.

What were you having problems with the D40?

I ended up buying and trying all different brand DSLR's last year from Ritz. I would buy one, try it for a couple of days and return it for something else till I was satisfied. After going through a bunch of cameras, I ended up falling in love with the D40.

I bought a D40X last year with an 18-70mm lens. Overall it is a very nice camera. The only problem is that it won't autofocus with my 60mm micro.

In the future, I would like to upgrade to a FX sensor Nikon, but the price needs to come down a bit...

For now, the 24-70mm looks like a great addition. The 18-70mm really does not like halogens and produces flare like crazy...
