Winter protection??

I drive a black 06 Ford Escape that I have been detailing with Zaino. I have gotten it to look pretty much the way I want:

& now I am wondering about protecting it through the snow & salt of an upstate NY Winter.

Would you guys recommend I put a layer of Collinite 845 over my multi coats of Zaino for the Winter, or leave it the way it is???

I have a black car also, & have had Collinite 476 recommended as bullet-proof protection for winter. I can't imagine you'ld go wrong with the 845 either.

I put on 3 coats of Z2Pro in October last year, and did not touch the car for

the entire winter. Water was still beading very nicely when i finally gave it

the first wash this year (sometime in April I think) For thos coming winter

though, I'm gonna do Z2Pro and then a coat of either 476 or whatever psycho

paste wax combo i come up with in the next few days:D

One of the best things about Collinite is the way it's "self cleaning"- stuff doesn't stick to it. That means that not only does it look better between washes, but more importantly you can wash very gently and still get the paint clean (which reduces the chances of marring).

I applied the last coat of 476S to the Blazer in mid-September...ran it through the touchless now and then and otherwise used it as a winter beater. The Collinite protected it just great and it was still slick, beading, and looking good when I redid it in May. And no wash-induced marring, despite the gritty winter [stuff] I was always cleaning off of it.

Leave it. :)

I got by with Z5pro x 3 last year. By doing a Z8 wipedown once a month or so, you will have PLENTY of protection. This year, I will add clearseal on top for even more protection.

I'd rather not start a new thread for this so I will post it here.

What are the significant differences between Collinite 845 and 476 other then liquid/paste??

Wow, from Sept to May? Did you use any other spray waxes in between?

I guess that depends how one defines "spray wax". I often sprayed on either Griot's SpeedShine, QuikShine, or EF Clear Pearl after a wash...those "leave something behind" QDs undoubtedly added a thin sacrificial layer that protected the Collinite a little bit.

The 845 looks a little better (generally described as "clearer" or "brighter"), at least until after a wash or three. But IMO the appearance differences are vastly exagerrated; I did some adjacent panels in both products and couldn't really see a difference on GM pewter metallic.

The 845 is *absolutely* trim-friendly. The 476S is usually OK in this regard, but you have to be a little more careful with it (apply very thin to trim and consider using W-O-W-O of such surfaces).

The 476S is more durable, especially on plastic surfaces where the difference can be strikingly obvious (dunno why, but it always seems to work out that way on plastic bumper covers/etc.). The only places where the LSP absolutely failed during that Sept.-May period was where I'd applied 845 to textured black plastic/rubber trim pieces, but a better example might be the rear bumper cover of my wife's A8- I applied 845 (one coat) and it failed long before I woulda expected, much faster than #16 ever does on that panel :nixweiss

Just top with whatever Z sealant you have as late in the Fall as possible. I would not polish prior because it sounds like you will be driving this vehicle during the winter. Just top the Zaino that is already there. You got the look you want, Zaino will outlast or equal any wax so why put anything else on top that would actually give possibly less durability then Z?

No need here to re-illustrate all the features of Zaino appearance longevity and protection durability. This is not to say you will not get outstanding performance from the 845. Its praise and recommendations come from some very reliable sources.

Unless, you just want to try something else, there is really no need to change your regimen. Since you already have Z8 you can also apply more protection after a winter wash.

Keep in mind no LSP will withstand constant assault by winter elements (rock salt, salt brime and sand) without some sort of removal of such agents during the winter. Wash and Z8 on those nice days and save the cost of applying something else and use that money to go to a drive-thru wash bay with a spray wand and wash the salt and grime off the undercarriage and fender wells.

I have had good luck with the Klasse twins in winter last year, but this year I think I will be doing a layer of 476 or two even. To me 845 and 476 seem to be similar in durability so far, but I have noticed they have gone from beading during washes, to more sheeting now, not sure if that is good or bad. With the average rain they still bead good though.

Couldn't agree with Accumulator more. Collinite gets better looking with each wash. My only complaint is it seems to attract dust UNTIL you wash it after the first time you apply the wax. Great stuff though.
