Will adding wax over Z decrease water shedding ability?

Sad little man

Title says it all. If I add a natural wax on top of Z2, will it lose it's great capabilities to shed water? I just love the way water beads off of it.

This has been discussed lots of times

and

is a topic of many opinions

I'll try to resume:

1) there's an opinion that says:

Z is a polimer sealant and has long durability , and is perfect as a base for wax.The wax has short durability , and is only good for the looks .

2)another opinion is:

Z is 99% optical perfect , why ruin it with a wax : a real carnauba-wax tends to yellow the looks a tiny little bit.

3)The oils in the wax will dissolve the Zaino underneath , so durability of the Z will be much less.

People have had good results with S100 on top of Z

Now it's up to you

Sorry if I caused confusion

After a meticulous prep this spring, I put down 3 coats of Z2.

The look is classic Zaino: sparkling, shiny, if a bit sedate. It has no depth or warmth to the shine on a lighter coloured car.

I've been topping with carnauba bi-weekly all summer, and haven't had a problem.

It won't be long before the carnauba has to come off in order to add another couple layers of Z, followed by carnaube for the winter months- I'll repost in the spring with results!

(our winters are uncommonly hard on cars, with frigid weather quickly followed by days of warm, slushy weather which brings the salt out of all the roads...)

A couple of add-on thoughts:

1) I spoke with Sal, and he explained that if I topped Zaino with wax, and then wished to layer more Zaino, Dawn would remove the wax, but would not touch the underlying Zaino.

2) I had topped the Old Zaino to get the deeper look, but it seems to me that the New Zaino has a slightly different look, that is somewhat deeper. I think I like the New Zaino look enough to forget about topping.:)

I've got Z2 topped with s100. At first I was unsure whether the s100 helped or not.

In the end I decided that s100 probably didn't increase the shine, but it did change the look, it bent the reflections a little more and also made the car unbelievably slick.

Now, I usually do this:

prep the paint, apply zaino (2 coats), apply glaze, apply s100.

the glaze fills in minor imperfections that the paint prep didn't get, and the s100 seals it up for a week or so. Then in 3 weeks when the texas sun has baked off all my wax, I've still got a good layer of Zaino protecting the finish until the next time i wax.

Be careful - consider the source. Many here have had less than desired results when trying to remove carnauba wax with dawn. Some waxes are not completely wiped out by dawn.

I think the reference to removal of the carnuaba by Dawn is based on washing off the remaining wax after a couple of weeks of environmental exposure ( normally waxing interval). I doubt Sal meant that Dawn would totally remove a freshly waxed surface.

I'm still with the "dawn overhype" camp here... No soap I've used is capable of completely removing wax unless the wax is quite "used up".

Also, how on earth will we know whether we indeed removed the wax only or the underlying layer of sealant?

I honestly don't think that anyone could honestly say "oh, after 2 weeks, my 2 coats of S100 has worn off and only thing left is my sealant right now, about 9 coats or so is left on my sealant..."

So with regards to re-applying a sealant over a waxed surface (regardless of whether there is a sealant base or not), I'd prefer to use a silicon free cleaner beforehand before recoating the sealant.

I don't claim this is the ultimate answer, just a reasonable or potential indication. I clean my applicators in the kitchen sink using my wife's Dawn. This includes CMA's yellow, white and grey pads; white terry cloth applicators, foams applicators, and the various things people send with their products. When I clean them, well — sometimes they are fresh, sometimes kind of dried on. Over a period of time I've come to realize that Dawn almost immediately, and with little effort, removes Souveran, S100, P21S, 3M PI-II SMR, various glazes & polishes; and surprising to me Klasse AIO and Blackfire II from a variety of items. Well, CMA told me Dawn would remove Blackfire II, so I guess I wasn't that surprised.

On the other hand, I can't get Dawn to even begin to clean either Zaino or Poorboy's EX out of anything.

After playing with this over an extended period of time, I've slowly come to the conclusion that there's a pretty could probability that Dawn really is removing the wax, and is really leaving the Zaino.:nixweiss
