juat wondering, what you guys keep in your car.

i got:
glove box: 2 MF towels, manuel and stuff
drivers side coin conpartment: notpad, pen, and im getting a calculator (mpg)
in back with the spare: car kit thing (jumpers, screwdrivers, ect), fire-extinguisher
ill probbly throw in a good blanket and a spray bottle for windows later

also, when your car breaks down on the road (your an idiot), but if it does, what are the 1st things your sposed to look for. Im just learning about all the crap under the hood, but what sould i look at first? is there a list somewhere of the top reasons for breakdowns?? if everything seems to be ok under the hood, should i check all the fuses? idk.

and more, whats the most matinance that you guys will do to your car? (change oil? barke fluid? wiper fluid? brake pads?)

still more: what do you do when your getting gas? just stand there cursing at the pump, or do you go around, kick your wheels (HTF do you do that????), pop the hood, wipe down the windsheild (with your own spray bottle and MF towel i assume).. get out some QD...

thanks

If your car breaksdown, there's not a single item that you would check for immediately. It all depends on what the cause is. If your oil light comes on then obviously check oil levels, or you could have over-heated due to a lack of coolant? Brake Master could have decided to go out, belt could have slipped off your alternator or power steering and now you loose PS, could be lots of things.

Just make sure that you regualarly change/check your oil & filter, check/change your air filter, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor if you have one, fuel filter, check tire pressure, check your belts for cracks etc., check brake fluid, transmission fluid, axle fluids, clutch fluid if you have a manual. Just follow the manufacture's guide and you should be okay.

I just keep a map, napkins, a dust mitt, MF with mini quick detailer and alcohol bottles (for bug poo), a mini credit card in case of emergency in the ash tray, an umbrella, poncho and mini vacuum cleaner along with a breaker bar and 19mm socket.

Most breakdowns are due to cooling system issues.

If your car breaks down, the only real thing you can do is let the car sit and cool, and try to start it again. Although, it may not be advisable depending on what made it quit.

I do everything myself to my car.

Your Manufacturers Scheduled Maintenance guide is there for a reason. The shop you go to for you coupon oil changes isn't trying to bait and switch you when they recommend other services...its probably cuz you need them.

you rotate your tires? lol, and i get free oil and service "long time" from the dealer.

whats a "breaker bar and 19mm socket"

Breaker bar is a longer, stronger, wrench for unbolting your wheels if you need to change to your spare. The 19mm socket (may be 17mm or other size) fits on your wheels' lug nuts.

Many times the lug nuts are on too tight for people to be able to take them off with the standard small wrench your car comes with.

As for what to do while gassing up... usually just stand there staring at the dollars rack up. Sometimes walk around the car to eyeball the tires for wear and maybe QD fingerprints around door handles.

You should not be wiping things down with any kind of cloth or MF...if you create static and it discharges in the right place, YOU will burst into flames - and then all the wax will melt. I even stay away from opening hoods/trunks and doors after I've started filling. When you close it, as the latch strikes the stop, it might create a spark. You can call this paranoia, but hey compared to the things some of you guys do to protect your paint...:yay

You guys actually go to the dealer?! That's too much for me...I'm not rich! And I don't want them touching my car. Every time I go in, it comes out with a new fine scratch (sometimes, just a big ol scratch) or oil stain somewhere...that's just bad news. If you can spend hours detailing the car, you can do your own oil changes and tire rotations. It also gives you a chance to detail the undercarriage and clean the backside of the wheels properly.

my shop>dealer

I have broke down many times in my cars and truck. I have a 66 Caprice and a 72 C10, and I admit that I have broke down, and its just a process of elimination.

My truck died once last summer, I was getting close to empty and on my way to get gas, and it started to bog and act like it wanted to die and it did. I finally got it started and got gas and made it home barely, come to find out fuel filter was clogged from all the crap in the bottom of my gas tank. :)

Anyway, I always work on my own stuff and never take anything to the dealer, except my wifes new 06 Honda Pilot, they can take care of that.

I usually keep some basic tools and cleaning supplys in my cars, thats it.

I dont need a dealer when I have a place like this-
