hey,

i would like to wetsand my headlamp assembly. what grits should i use ??

1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 ??

and where locally can i buy some. i looked at auto parts stores but they are like 4 bucks for a pack of one grit. i would like to buy an assortment or buy them one at a time.

home depot or something ??

What grit you start with depends on what it is your trying to correct. Unless it's some major defect I'd start with 1500.

The lower the grit the more aggressive the paper is.

You also will need to step through the grits (follow 1000 grit with 1200,1500, 2000 - follow 1200 with 1500,2000 and so on.

I remember looking for autobody sandpaper at lowes and home depot and coming up blank.

Think your best bet is an Auto Body supply shop. Not only will they have all the stuff you need, but most carry sand paper in single sheets as well.

Auto parts stores may carry some as well, but not likely in single sheets.

Good Luck

Id go 1500 -> 2000. You don't really need 3000, cause plastic is really soft. I buffed out a 2000 grit sanded rearview mirror with Menzerna PO85RD, which is a lot milder than whats needed to get 2000 grit marks out of paint.

Yeah, put in the effort to find the Uni-Grit stuff. It leaves a lot nicer finish than the 3M papers I used previously.

FWIW, I never seem to need aggressive papers. I'd rather go over an area a few times with 2500/3000 than use something more abrasive. Not the most efficient approach, but safe and effective. I like to idiot-proof this sort of procedure as much as I can lest I do something, well, idiotic.

Of course, you could just call or order the Unigrit paper and blocks from Meguiars if not search for online auto body supply sites or check out Ebay.

I bought those packs of 3M paper.. 1500 and 2000 is all that it took for my headlights. After the 2000 I was just sure I had ruined my headlights, but following it up with Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish cleaned em right up. Also bought a sanding block to hold the sand paper.. so maybe $15 of stuff when it'd cost me well over $100 to replace the headlights. Not a bad deal :xyxthumbs
