Undercarrage/frame rails/w wells

What do you fellas use on the inner tubs as far as paint on exposed frame parts? This is a truck, suv question,I would think on most cars the inner tub is hidden and not as exposed as in a higher suv.I know I have used hammered spray paint with OK longevity. The problem here in the northeast is sand and salt beating up the wells.

Do you sand metal parts first and prime? paint? whats the best process..:bow:surrender

Are you talking about resurfacing the metal and wells, or a coating to make them look cleaner and shine up a bit?

I just want to get the winter rash cleaned up, and I am sorry to say some new light surface rust should be addressed. I do wash the plastic ww's with a brush but have never treated them with anything. What would you say works well as far as a vinal or plastic treatment on the inner wells?

I've detailed some trucks/SUV's with lift kits, so the wheel wells are exposed. Unless I'm wrong, the wheel wells are black plastic.

I've always just scrubbed them with APC, hosed them off, let dry, then spray them with Tire Foam. They look great and tend to repel water, salt, sand, etc. at least for a short time. Repeated applications get you through the winter....

Actually, as cheap as Tire Foam is, I use it on all my cars wheelwells all year round!

Here's the difference in a "dirty" wheelwell and one that's been sprayed with Tire Foam. In this case, I did wipe it after applying the TF (because I had the wheel off), but it's not necessary. It dries pretty well.

Just makes them look nice and black!:yay

I have never tried this but sounds good, quick and easy.

Thanks:bigups

That TF is great used in this application,I never had a clue to try it here.

In the top pic in the front corner the "frame rail',on a p/u truck you can see this area when it gets rusty or dull, would you use a spray bomb to secure an even clean complete detailed well.:surrender

For exposed frame parts I always use Eastwood Corroless followed up by their Chassis Black which I think they've improved upon since I bought it. Great stuff.

Bill Luster:
In your before and after picture, did you clean/scrub the wheel well liner before spraying on the tire foam?
Did you need to do anything to the painted fender area other than just wash it after the tire foam. I'm curious if the tire foam leaves any residue on the fender lip that is difficult to remove.
Since I don't use tire foam, I have no idea what happens when it's used. Maybe it's time I found out. :)

Charles... If I recall... I cleaned the wheelwells with APC before applying tire foam. But that is not ALWAYS true. I was re-painting the calipers and had the wheels off anyway.

Normally, I'll just spray the wheelwells with tire foam on my DD (in fact I did it last night)... and just let it dry.

It will drip on your driveway, so I will throw down some old t-shirts or old towels for the drippings.

It will leave some overspray on the fender lip... I just wipe it off with QD spray... Very easy to get off. Doesn't hurt the paint at all.

I use it because it's CHEAP. Wally-world carries it for $2.84 per can!!! I use either ArmorAll brand or Son-Of-A-Gun.

After driving in the rain, most of it will be washed off, but I just apply it again on the next sunny day.

Just gives a clean car the finished look.

To me, it's almost as important as tire dressing... (can't stand dry, gray, tires on a nice clean car!!!).

I know a lot of guys who use Griot's garage undercarriage spray. I'm just not going to spend that much for the wheel wells on a car that I drive to work every day. I can do my car 10 times (or 10 weeks) for less that 3 bucks.:yay
