UDM test results

I made a deal with someone to do an exterior detail on their car a few weekends ago, and now that several weekends have passed and they still haven't been able to get the car to me, I decided to find something else to test the UDM on. Testing it on my car wouldn't be much of a test, so I looked around for something else...

My impressions are these:

The noise does not seem to be much louder than the PC, if at all. The tone is slightly different, but that's all I can say for sure.

There is certainly more power in the UDM. It is noticeably harder to bog down.

The UDM worked perfectly with my Propel Turbo backing plate and pads, so I appreciate that. The pads that come with the UDM kit are also nice. Their size is great. Sometimes the 4" pads are a bit too small, and the 6.5"/7" pads are too big. These fill that void.

On to a few pics:

I made some italian sausage on the grill afterward, and gave it a little QD when I finished eating. :chuckle:

So that's the review huh?

I guess it's more comic relief than serious review though. I will admit, the grill does look good.

The UDM is essentially a PC 7424 with upgrades. There are a couple main differences that others mentioned, those being noise and power. I felt that those were the important things to touch on.

If you have questions about another aspect of the machine, I can respond with my opinion on it.

This is very true. I got my UDM today and with a pad of product, I accidentally touched the ON/OFF switch while gripping it and it covered me and everything around me with product. At first, I was wondering how anyone could accidentally turn the unit on, but it becomes apparent after a few minutes of use. The switch sits a little high on the body and requires very little effort to turn it on. So the act of holding it if you aren't careful has the potential to trip it. But that's not a deal breaker for me--it performed great in all other ways over my PC.

With the polisher face down and ready to use, the switch doesn't feel like it's too sensitive, but turn it over, put polish on the pad, and watch where you hold the polisher.

I will be posting my own review as I use it more over the next week. I've got a bunch of black cars in the queue, but I had no problems polishing out 2500 grit sanding marks today with the UDM set on speed 5-1/2.

Ok, people have commented about the on-off switch being too easy to operate, your opinion?

Still waiting for a side by side polishing comparison. Nothing else matters to me. Smoother, heftier, better looking, don't really care. Polishing power compared to the PC, I do care.

Next time you detail a car, do a panel with the PC and the panel next to it with the UDM, same pad, same polish and same speed (if the PC is on 6, use the UDM on 6). Use a good light and take pics! :)

Why in the heck you have to ask for something logical, like apples to apples?

For people concerned about the on/off switch, it just requires you being a little more mindful. It'd be nice to have one fewer thing to worry about but be mindful and you'll avoid a big mess.

Also be mindful of the Law of Large Numbers and Murphy's law. That way you won't be so mad when you do cover your garage with 106FF.

That sums things up extremely well!:goodjob

Scottwax, there is a thread over at Autogeekonline comparing the PC vs. UDM and there is a side-by-side comparison on a black Vette in full sun, and the UDM removed more defects.

I totally agree. Let's be a little more scientific when comparing these two machines. Everyone always says the same thing.

I know that I have reached point in my life where my eyesight is not what it used to be but I saw those pictures before and for the life of it I could not see whether UDM really removed more or that was an illusion due to angle of the light, reflection, and camera.
