The QEW thread

I'll go first. Here's the method I use:

You need:

32oz high volume sprayer

Jug of QEW

small bucket

large bucket or leak-proof bag

microfiber cloths

drying towel

Start from the top of the car, and work down, by sections.

Spray the section with the sprayer, filled with plain water

Fill the small bucket with QEW and soak a MF towel in it until it is dripping.

Fold MF into quarters, and gently wipe the dirt off the section

Flip to a clean section, and scrub as much or as little as you like

Dry the section with the (WW) drying towel. Don't worry if you leave streaks or do an incomplete job.

Mist the section again with water, QD, or Eagle One WAUD. Wipe off with a dry or nearly dry MF towel (not the drying towel)

Move on to the next section. Move on to new towels as they get dirty and toss the old ones in the large bucket or bag. Do the wheels last.

Advantages:

Uses only about 1/2 gallon QEW

You always touch the car with a clean towel.

Other tips:

The Q in QEW means get it off the car quickly. It seems to etch waterspots in the wax. Even a scrubbing followup with #34 Final Inspection won't get these spots out.

I modified my technique based on two things: One is that WW MF's don't do that great of a job drying, especially once they start to get damp. The second is that QEW seems to etch waterspots or streaks, hence the final spray-down with another fluid to get off the last remaining bits of QEW.

my method

2 large buckets

1 washmitt (should be two but it's all I have)

a few cotton rags

1 MF (not much supplies yet)

1 oz QEW

1 sprayer bottle with some QEW and water.

1. spray down car with sprayer (pretty much only for really dirty cars

2. use washmitt w/QEW to do roof, then doors, then back, then front.

3. dip washmitt in rinse bucket as needed, scrub fur with hands to get dirt off, put back in QEW solution

4. dry with rag and then MF once you complete a section (door or what not

My method sucks. It is too much trouble. New technique:

Take car to self car wash and spray it down. You'll get most of the dirt off.

Now use my original method. It should only take 2 towels to wash your car now coz you don't have to be super careful about dirt scratching.

Actually tried that today with QEW and loved it. Might as well go with a sudsing wash though. What I'm doing is sticking to QEW wash in the garage and am looking into a wash for the purpose of heading to the coin-op

NO, don't wanna use theirs, just something I bring along. A traditional sudsing one. What am I saying, I'm happy with QEW.

Does anybody know the freezing point of QEW? I'm wondering how cold it can be outside when I could still use QEW. Would it be OK to use when there is salt on the car or is it just for light dirt?

I don't know about all this, the method I use I got from some autopian and it works great. Mix up your QEW in the bucket, wash each section with a Chenille mit, wipe with Terry cloth and wipe with MF, presto.

If the car is extremely salty I try to use a spray bottle with the QEW mix in it to kinda pre-soak the panel. I have used it during the dead of winter...of course the bottle stays in the house...just be sure toi wipe it off quickly or have someone else follow you around the car drying as you go.

"Uses only 1/2 gallon of QEW"?

LOL, I figured out what you meant, that you use only 1/2 gallon of QEW solution, ie 1/2 oz instead of 1 or 2 oz; but you might want to modify your recipe of your method to make that more explicit.

Nice research and experimentation, though. I like the way you only use a clean side against the car.
