So after about 6 years of reading these forums....

I decided to take the plunge and do some polishing! I have to say, I was actually a little nervous/excited....not sure why (I think I had information overload going on.) Honestly, the hardest part was trying to find an angle that showed swirls in the sun and with my Brinkmann. For some reason this blueish color on my jeep hides swirls like crazy.

My process:

Wash:

Dawn wash, then dry (Cobra WW drying towel)

Clay:

Detailers Pride clay w/ONR as lube

Two-bucket wash with ONR then dry to setup for polish

Polish:

Griots Garage random orbital (new version)

HD Uno on an HD Uno pad

91% IPA wipedown to verify work

LSP:

HD Poxy applied with HD Poxy pad

It literally took me from 10am - 4pm to get the hood, roof, front facia, front quarter panel and drivers door done. I was so exhausted I had to stop, to those of you who do this everyday, I have even more respect for you all than I did before today!

Thanks for all the props guys! Accumulator, I have read about 20 threads where you promote incandescent lighting as your go-to source for inspections (for the most part). I purchased a 700w Halogen work-light and I just couldn't get the angle right while inspecting. Do you find that incandescent makes it easier to catch swirls on cars like mine that seem to have a lot of flake W/a lighter color....i'm thinking LED or incandescent are my next purchases.

Yeah, I *do* find incandescents to be much better, and it's exactly that kind of paint that I use 'em on.

Note that one of the big tricks is to use said lighting in an otherwise dark environment, which will be tricky/impossible if you're working outside.

But for the ~$25 it'll cost, I'd buy an incandescent trouble light and mess around with it. You'll still drive yourself nuts finding the right viewing/illumination angle/distance, but IME it's still better than the halogen.

I haven't played around with enough LEDs to have an opinion on them. I did a bit with my LED-equipped SureFire, but it wasn't my cup of tea (perhaps because I just don't see that flashlight in that role :nixweiss ).

thanks so much for the props guys!!...its crazy when you think about it, before I started reading these forums I loved to wash/wax my cars but had no idea what was REALLY involved in caring for paint.

Every technique, tip , product , etc... was all learned from reading threads on here and learning from the guys who take time to post here that do this for a living......so taking all that information and executing it to a finished product was a fulfilling moment for me. Again thanks to everyone who looked and Ill be sure to post pics of the finished product.

Awesome work there so far. So how do you like HD?

I have nothing to compare it to but I can say it was very easy for me to use. The HD Uno was very "consistent" in how it broke down and the results it produced, I eventually figured out exactly how many passes it would take to get defects out. I had a couple spots w/holograms but it seemed to happen when I worked a section too quickly. My truck has pretty heavy swirling and it managed to knock down the swirls without a problem!

The HD Poxy goes on super easy with the blue pad and comes off with just a couple passes with a microfiber. I think I might toss another layer on but so far, I do enjoy the depth/gloss it produces more than the Zaino Z2 I used to have on the car. All-in-all I will continue to be an HD customer as the products have lived up to their claims so far and WOW is their shipping fast!!!

p.s. tdekany thanks a a lot for all of your HD posts, they helped me make a decision on what to use.
