SnW vs QD's

OK, I have a question. I have been a true weekend warrior for about a year. I spent time here lurking and learning prior to that, but made the leap, bought a PC and loads of product and started learning in earnest about a year ago. I enjoy learning and implementing the process and I owe all of you many thanks for that.

My question concerns your everyday QD's vs. PB's Spray n Wipe or similar products. I am aware of the various ways of inducing micro-marring, spider swirls, scratches, and other screw-ups in the paint and try and be very careful to be sure and not drag contaminates or cheap wash/drying rags and other equipment across my car's finish. I use a QD when the car is clean and has been washed within the last 24 hours or so. I don't do a lot of QDing to tell the truth. Anywho, I ordered PB's Spray n Wipe and have used it as directed, never on a dirty surface, but when a little dusty I have used it. It seems to do a great job and I have had no problems with marring, et cetera.

QUESTION: What makes PB's SnW any different than any other QD. They are both a watery liquid that provide lubricity and some cleaning ability and provide a little protection. What makes SnW better at cleaning a dusty (and some appear to advocate cleaning a truly dirty) car than your average QD. I really can't figure it. Is it just promotion and a sales gimmick for another type product, or is SnW really that superior to QD?

Thanks again for all your kind help learning what has turned out to be a great hobby for me..........Tom :2thumbs:

As with any type of product, there is a range of ingredients that provide certain properties. S&W seems to be "tuned" to the cleaning end of the range, rather than the gloss or slickness end of the range (as Pb's S&G is). If you want to complain about marketing hyperbole--every detailing product out there is chock full of it, I don't think the Pb's stuff is any more or less hyped than anything else.

You could e-mail Steve of Poorboy's directly and he will give you the specific scoop. He's a great guy and quite honest and straightforward.

I think S&W contains more surfactants and emusifiers that encapsulate and life dirt off the the surface better than "regular" QD's. The viscosity is not too thick either so that likely contributes to the products ease of use.

There are other "heavy duty" QD's that function similarly. FK's 146, Chemical Guy's Speed Wipe and Adam's Detail Spray have excellent cleaning power. Meguiar's #34 cleans really, really well too as does Duragloss' Fast Clean and Shine. While the above products all add gloss and some slickness, I find that there is some sacrifice in slickness for the better cleaning power. Products like FK's 425 and ClearKote's Quickshine offer more slickness than the above but have less cleaning ability.

Out of the above mentioned products, I find the Chemical's Guy's, the 146 the Adams and the Duragloss to have a bit more slickness than the others.

Not complaining even a little bit, just wanting to know any real differences in these two different products. Not trying to disparage anyone or any product, just curious for answers. If someone ask me the difference, I wouldn't know how to answer, and I hate that.

Thanks for your input :) ..........Tom

Hey, I was using "complain" in the friendly, conversational sense. It is surely difficult to differentiate these similar products. I have S&W, but I really don't use it as a waterless wash because if the car is pretty clean, I use a QD (or do nothing), and if it's dirty, I wash it. So I don't really have a good comparison basis.

The other day, I had washed my car, and while going over it afterwards with a spray sealant, I noticed there was a big sticky bug residue on my headlight. I used S&W to remove it...whether a "QD" would have gotten it off, I can't say.

i am glad you asked because i need a new qd/ waterless wash and im hoping to find something on the cleaning end of the spectrum. I would also like to know more of the differences. i have a post titled best cleaning QD that has some good suggestions in it.

I agree with Setec and Emazda3S, there's a spectrum of QD's with all different cleaning abilities and slickness. S&W is at the cleaning end of the spectrum. Personally, I find Chemical Guys Speed Wipe has S&W-like cleaning ability, with nice slickness too. There is a real difference in cleaning ability between S&W/Speed Wipe and most others, but with Speed Wipe I don't have to sacrafice anything. :2thumbs:
