Senior Square Design, I need help!

Hey DC! About to graduate and I'm designing a senior square. What is a senior square? On a certain number of your stairwells there are lots of white walls open. As year seniors are allowed to design their own 11 x 11 square design. My question is, is it possible to spray clear coat onto a painted surface easily? I'm looking for something unique, but possible of course. Anyone have any suggestions for clearcoat? Should I prep specially?

What material is used for the square? Ceramic tile? Paper? Wood?

How about using a polyurethane coating over your finished product? Perhaps a satin finish, or a semigloss finish. Either will set your square apart from the others...
